RACINE - Wondering what to do when you're drunk, cold, tired and wearing a kilt in Downtown Racine?
One St. Patrick's Day Parade-day reveler allegedly found the answer on the other side of a closed shop's door: You kick in the glass, lie down, and go to sleep.
Police went to Common Scents, 303 Main St., about 7:20 p.m. Saturday, after a woman standing across the street from the store reported seeing a man break into the store. She told officers she saw a man wearing a kilt kick in the window of the shop's front door, then back into the store. She hadn't seen him come out.
Officers went into the store and saw the kilted man - 6 feet 5 inches tall, 185 pounds, brown hair and blue eyes - lying on the floor.
Sleeping.
Officer Ryan Comstock announced the police were there and asked the man to show his hands. But the man seemed dazed and not very alert, Comstock wrote in his report.
The man complied with the request to show his hands, but not in the way officers probably intended.
"He then flipped me off and just laid there," the report states.
Comstock and Officer Michael Ditscheit then placed the man in handcuffs.
They reported the man was "very intoxicated." He could not answer their questions about what he was doing there or what happened. The summary of the report simply stated "subject broke into store to take a nap."
The District Attorney's Office filed a charge of misdemeanor criminal damage to property against Dustin Nelson on Monday. Nelson is 24 years old and lives in Plymouth, Minn.
