I bought a Brand new FelPro Head gasket for a B18B1 on my LS/VTEC swap. I want the most compression out of the swap, and I'm not getting that with this 3 layer gasket. My question is, can I remove the top and bottom layer on the new head gasket and coat it with Copper gasket spray?

What you want to do is take out the center part of the gasket. Top and bottom have a rubber coating that allows a perfect seal.

Plus your gonna run into head gasket issues. our blocks are open deck. so when you add a single layer head gasket that thin.....its not good.

If you want higher compression, buy higher comp pistons. Milling the head and using a super thin head gasket is just asking for trouble.

Do it right so you wont have to do it again.

Plus you will only gain about .2 gain in compression with a single layer head gasket. Not worth it.

So, best bet is remove center layer and copper coat the rest?

If you're set on using this particular head gasket, then yes. The absolute best solution would be to purchase an after-market head gasket specifically designed for adjusting compression...

agreed :) he should use a cometic MLS gasket since he can get them in different (any) thickness he wants. in germany theyre using extremely thick head gaskets by cometic to lower compression for bigger turbos using stock pistons and rods. dont know how much they can go before they break rods but the thick head gaskets are one way they lower compression for boosted engines

I ended up using a stock 3 layer head gasket... It's just an LS/VTEC build, everything stock, nothing special. I don't want to take any chances and have to do it all over again.

Thanks Magana for your recommendations, you saved me a possible problem! Engine is now completely assembled and wired up, Vtec works wonderfully... A very fun, quick daily driver!
