Well.. I went to watch a movie tonight, turned on my 3 year old samsung Theater system and it started to smoke, took it apart and it had fried itself.

So, I wanted to see what all everyone has in their home for their entertainment, and see if anyone had opinions on what to look into for a replacement.

Id like to get a 5.1 or 7.1 that has a Blu-ray player in it, but other than that I'm pretty flexible with brand. I just want a good product, with good sound!

Thanks guys!

Don't do it man. Never buy all in one systems one part breaks and the whole system is trash or you start to use it as a stand alone player or receiver.

If you don't have a lump of cash sitting around buy one piece at a time. Main item is a receiver get one that supports hdmi and enough power to power some legit speakers down the road. Nice ones can be had in the 300-400 range if you still have money left get a base model ps3 299.99

For speakers just use what you already as more money comes in buy one set of speakers at a time.

If built right you can get 10-15-20-25 years from a legit system even better some parts like good speakers could last a lifetime

My patents still use their system my brother put together 20 years ago. Only thing changed was just this year they upgraded to a hdmi receiver.

Yeah, I've still got the speakers from the last system it is just the "reciever" so to speak that went out on me. I might just look into do that instead.

Another thing to keep in mind is blu ray players. as far as quality goes there can be a wide range of it. a all in one system is pretty much a guarantee that it will be of the lowest quality players out there.

Yeah, I went to Bestbuy, sat down in front of their home theater setup with a 5.1 Klipsch speaker setup and it blew my mind, so thats what I decided I'm buying, the two front speakers are 400ish, the sub is 350ish, the two rear speakers are 400 and the center one is 200, and that's just speakers, I'd still have to buy a receiver, and bluray player and stuff, but the speakers can be bought in pairs so I can just get the front three and the sub and wait on the rear ones.

Best buy isn't really a "real" sound place. If you can find a place that specializes in sound equipment I'd do that.

Best Buy Magnolia will have more then hes willing to spend.

Now if you're talking B&W or Mcintosh Then I'd agree, he'd need to go else where.
Then again he.

A. wouldn't be posting on here since a Honda would be the last car on his list.
B. would pay someone to tell him whats good.

Before jumping on any random set of speakers research research research. You want it to be a one time buy.

lots of A&V forums out there. just search.

I have a pieced together sound system and did way too much research before purchasing lol

In terms of a receiver with a low budget.....I think anything that has DTS reading capabilities should be your range (and there's a lot of options there). I like optical cable for the sound. But if you are hell bent on HDMI.....you need to make sure the receiver interprets HDMI and not just a transfer station (like an octopus to the other components with one out to the TV) There are a lot of receivers that are just a transfer stations which IMO means its not worth the cash for all the HDMI cables when Optical cable is very clean and cheaper. The only thing the transfer receivers are good for is if you want to use your reciever's remote to switch inputs. A half way decent receiver that truly supports HDMI is $700 (give or take)

I got my Onkyo for $225 through Amazon (but it was last year's model at the time). Its nothing special but supports Dolby Digital and DTS (along with others) plus it puts out 75 clean watts per channel. I'm running HDMI cables from my cable box and PS3 to my TV but run optical from my TV to my receiver. I would probably get better sound running a optical cable from each component to the receiver but I hate using 15 remotes. So running the optical from the TV to the receiver eliminates the need for the receiver's remote.

In terms of speakers.....I believe the heart of it all should be the center channel (but I don't use my system for music much). I have a basic Polk Audio speaker set up (5.1) and the little sub is way enough for me (and I like me some bass-boom-bottom sometimes). The satellite speakers are nice too. The center channel is enough for me but I am still looking for a decent deal on a top quality replacement.

If I could buy my system over again....Its hard for me to think what I would have done differently. Yes....I would love to have a $800 receiver and a $600 center channel but thats almost 3 times what I paid for the system I have now. I truly like my set up and it was roughly $500 for all my home theater.

I agree....research like no ones business!

Gotcha, I've been doing some research, and found a lot of good reviews about Klipsch, and some Samsung stuff too, so Im going to wait and look into it a little more, I found a smaller 5.1 system that Klipsch has and people say its almost better than the floor speakers and the sub, so we'll see.

unless you are in a single family home I'd skip the sub for now and just get good full size speakers. my plans were to add a sub once I moved out go figure after moving out I found that the speakers I had were more then enough even in a bigger room

subs are a must have with smaller speakers or a nice add on in a full blown setup I'm talking legit home theater with 80+ inch screen and theater seating

for what you will most likely use it for I'd put the money from not getting a sub into better fronts/center

Good point, that's probably what Ill end up doing. I still have my 6'' Samsung sub from my last set up that I could use if I ended up needing some boom haha..

I have never heard anything "good" about Samsung home theaters. Lots of receivers and speakers that have better reviews than Samsung (although their LCD's are kick-ass) Check out some Audiophile forums and Amazon has some decent customer reviews too.

Best bet it to piece it together...it can be cheaper and definitely sounds better.

Yeah, I've got a 55'' Samsung 3D tv on the way, and before that I had a 32'' Samsung, I love their TV's, not too fond of their HTIB, their recievers are really good though.

Corvetteguy, are you selling your setup? If you are how much are you wanting shipped.

Klipsh is good. I have Monitor and I'm happy with them. I have a Klipsh 10" sub. I would get the sub.

My receiver is an old Denon, no HDMI. :(
