I'm sure it varrys from state to state but does anyone know what the laws are on having things sticking out of your hood? I'm talking more for the older cars, I picked up a camaro as a project and it'll take me a while to finish it (but when don't they?) and I was wondering what the laws would be with an air filter or super charger/carb/air filter sticking out of the hood would be, some people told me that in CT it's legal to even run without a hood as long as you still have the hinges on but I want to make sure before I start doing work with something I couldn't even drive you know?

thanks
Bob

pretty sure it's illegal. that said, most cops don't give a shit provided you are driving normally or at a car show/cruise night/etc.

alright, thanks guys. I was thinking that if anything I could just get a 6" or so cowl hood but I have a ways to go before I even think about it being done.

thanks

My friend had a 4" cowl on his 80 something Camaro. Got tickets for it all the time in NJ.

yeah they aren't to strict around here and plus I wouldn't really drive it to much seeing it wouldn't be "fuel efficient" I would only drive it to shows and maybe to work every now and again.

yeah I ended up picking a shell up from a guy down the street from me, there isn't to much rust or rot on it, no doors missing some interior things and exterior parts. but it's a project and I'm turning it into either a 4 speed or a 5 speed, I'm not sure which one though

Well, it is conservative central right? No need for a hood- it's really just a cosmetic piece on most cars, and not expressly a piece of safety equipment like a bumper or a seat belt. I don't even think bumpers are required here.

i used to live in georgia and i drove around with no hood for a while. no one ever said anything. i see plenty of cars with cowl hoods and/or blowers sticking up here in florida and when i live in georgia. i dont see what the big deal is?

I believe florida's law about engine parts sticking out of hood is it has to be covered by a hood cowl and still be see the road or something along the line. Florida is usually reaaaaally laid back too. I mean hell.. we don't have emission tests. If we did, I think almost every thing over 5 years would be taken off the road.

I have always felt like NH Inspection laws were really just meant to phase out older cars. I was a licensed inspector for several years and, having become intimately familiar with the inspection code, I can honestly say that many of the laws do not even apply to newer cars.

A car fails the safety inspection if there are rust holes. They say it is because a kid "could" walk by and "could" put their finger in the hole and "could" get cut and then "could" contract tetanus (this was the explanation given to me by a state trooper). It is really just an excuse to get rusty cars off the road because the elitist state legislators don't want to have to look at that shit. End of story...

It's the same with Euro style tail lights and loud exhausts failing inspection. They are not unsafe...they were considered part of the F & F trend and the Volvo, BMW, Audi, Mercedes crowd had to squash that shit before it got out of hand.

Ironically, many years of Lexus vehicles have clear lense "euro style" tail lights from the factory...those pass.

The same with ride height laws. I got ride height tickets when my truck was static dropped and not as low as a factory corvette. I had a state trooper tell me it was illegal because if I rear end a semi, I will go under the bumper and get decapitated. I said, "well what about factory C5 corvettes? They are much lower and probably way more dangerous. My truck is about as low as your average passenger car now" "well son those cars come engineered like that for a reason. Your truck came higher and now you've made it unsafe"

Ok thanks Office Improv....

you're in for a rude awakening next year. Florida just adopted calilfornia emissions for 2011. :)
