Proving that its spine is as thin as its coverage map, AT&T (NYSE: T) will no longer sell unlimited data plans to new smartphone customers starting next week.
We may have seen this coming, given the carrier's notoriously strained wireless network. However, AT&T has the audacity to try to sugarcoat the bad news as a benefit for consumers.

This is the announcement's headline -- and I swear that I'm not making this up:
AT&T Announces New Lower-Priced Wireless Data Plans To Make Mobile Internet More Affordable To More People

Let's assess this from the perspective of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone owners. As of right now, 2G users pay $20 a month to AT&T for unlimited data. Owners of faster 3G and 3GS handsets pay $30 a month for the online usage smorgasbord.
Come June 7 -- the day that most expect will coincide with the debut of Apple's newest iPhone -- the only two plans available will be a $15 DataPlus plan (with a measly 200-megabyte monthly limit) and a $25 DataPro offering (with a better, yet still restrictive, 2-gigabyte cap).

There's a slap for that

AT&T claims that 98% of its smartphone customers go through less than 2 gigs a month on average, but that metric smells fishy to me. It's lumping email-centric Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) devices and cheaper smartphones into the mix. I can guarantee you that more than 2% of AT&T's iPhone users are eating through more than two gigabytes of data month.
AT&T's announcement is also unintentionally funny. "Customers can also use unlimited Wi-Fi at home, in the office or elsewhere if available," it reads at one point. Really, AT&T? You're going to let me use my non-AT&T broadband provider's bandwidth without charging me? That's so sweet -- of me.
It's also introducing tethering -- the ability to use your smartphone as a modem to power connectivity for a secondary computing device -- for an additional $20 a month. Uh, what's the point in paying for tethering on a metered plan? If you're going to cap usage, tethering should be absolutely free. Tethering without an unlimited data plan is like taking a yacht out on a puddle, performing a hair transplant on a cadaver, or taking a Lamborghini on a test drive through a school speed zone.
The news gets worse for iPad owners who forked over an extra $130 for a 3G model. Come next week, the $29.99 unlimited 3G data plan will no longer be sold to new buyers. Those who haven't activated the $29.99 plan before Monday will have to settle for the $25 DataPro plan.

AT&T just sold you out, Apple. The iPad is made for heavy data usage. The two most popular non-Apple downloads at launch were video-streaming apps for Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) and Disney's (NYSE: DIS) ABC. Who will want to pay a premium for the 3G model that comes with a cab meter?
Opportunity knocks
There can't be losers without winners. AT&T's decision to shutter its unlimited buffet will be a dinner bell for other companies.

Luckily I already have my ATT plan with unlimited data. They fuck with it at all, then I'll be paying the cancellation fee to get rid of it.

sprint is going too.

i pull about 5gb through my iphone data each month. we're a TMO berry house, and i just had this conversation with verizon about data coverage since we are shopping contracts, throttling and overage charges.... since they are hooking consumer/biz/enterprise with the cap. after that, i shook their hands and thanked them for their time.

this does not apply to enterprise agreement customers (sprint/AT&T) :)

the consumers must vote with their money! the telecommunication companies are bending us over and ramming it hard. first it was broadband, now wireless and next is probably tv.

they advertise they have the fastest speed, the largest coverage, etc etc but when its time to step up, they bitch and moan that people are saturating their network. i have an idea, take all those earnings from raping people and upgrade the aging network.

seriously, for a nation that is supposedly a super power, 1st world with the highest GDP, we are painfully lacking in technology and education.

I hope Verizon doesn't follow suit. Many people leave AT&T for a reason. Hell, our home phone/landline, AT&T, doesn't work right now!

if my plan is fucked with, i will be leaving at&t.
fuck that
i already bought the fucking iphone AND pay 30$ a month for unlimited. im not paying $5 less to worry about watching my usage
im one of the "2%" that falls over the 2gb cap theyre about to put in place
i have a feeling that number is missing a zero

You signed a contract. If you currently pay for unlimited data, you will have that for at least the length of your contract.

But that said I used roughly 500MB a month on my iPhone. That's through 3G. If I have wifi access, I used that. It's usually faster and uses less battery.

But I agree that adding tethering without an unlimited data plan is fucking bullshit. AND having to pay extra just for the feature? That's gay. Tethering just boosts your data usage. You will eat through 2gig then pay out the ass for the overages. Which sucks cause I was looking forward to tethering with unlimited data. I might just have to JB the phone and use one of the tethering or mobile wifi apps.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Iphone = fial
JB Iphone = not too shabby

With the HTC Incredible you plug it into any universal USB cable to a computer and it will give you the option to.

charge only
Sync info (think itunes but with out the annoying program)
mount as disk drive
and..... Mobile Broadband connect, share phone's mobile network with PC

no charge, no installing, its all there from the factory.

I do think 2gb would be hard to blow through while using 3G, but now everyone will have to watch what they use. Just like with comcast, if it's only 2% of its users that are a problem, then whats the big fucking deal? you can't tell me 2% is really taxing the network that much, does their network suck THAT bad? oh wait, we already know the answer to that question, look at their map.

I have nothing but good things to say about comcast cable, I've had great service with them with zero problems. They just put into effect the limits on usage a few months ago they sent me an e-mail with a guide on how to see your usage, go to so and so website, put in your account # and click view usage. I followed their guide step by step only to go in circles, I never did get to see my usage, tried on both FireFox and IE. Their prices have gone up over the years and the usage thing went into place....

7 years zero issues (one of the only people from what it seems) I really liked my comcast.

I now have Fios.

I agree, we need to put our money into companies that will offer us what we want. Only issue is if every compapny follows suit, we'll all be screwed no matter what. Unless everyone uses nothing but wifi but then you can't buy a phone at the special pricing, all of them force you to buy the data package in order to get the special pricing.

rock > everyone < hardplace

i thought verizon charged for tethering? i know quite a few people who have verizon here at work and they have tethering and said its an extra 20 bucks a month or so.

only problem is that FiOS isnt available in like 99% of anywhere. seems like most people that want it arent in the area. frustrating to say the least.

but whats this about comcast limits? what is the cap? i thought it was like 250GB or something, has that changed?

I haven't heard anything about Verizon charging for it. just googled around and it sounds as if it does cost but I didn't get a clear answer. Although since it is a droid you can install any of the handfuls of solftware out there that will allow you to do it for free. Same for Iphone IF its jailbroken.

Not sure what the comcast limits are, it could be 1000GB limits, the fact that they have limits piss me off.

Plus with Fios I'm now pulling 23-25 down and 20 up anytime I run a speed test. I just wish more websites supported it =(

I tether everyday with my rooted Pre. I have accrued gigs and gigs of usage in the past 9 months. And Sprint has not said a thing about it.

if verizon used sim cards, i'd be there. i just dont' want to switch carriers right now.

we'll see what the 4G iphone has in store before i get rid of the blackberry.

I was nervous when they introduced the 250gb cap, but i think it's fair.

both me and E are online all day every day streaming shit. I DL the website db dump just about every day adding 200mb of transfer a day... i stream at least 3-5 shows/movies a week over netflix, etc. and i'm still not touching 250gb.
My, I was in bed a good portion of the month being sick, so i streamed a ton more movies, hence the bigger figures.

I always wondered what I used. but again, how bad could that 1% be?

Either way I'm glad I made the switch.
