b18b1 went stupid today...........gave me a ECU code 0 and not firing. turning over but not firing. so i swapped ecus, same thing. tugged on the dizzy wires and map sensor wires and it started with the CEL on and running so rich if u hit the gas it will die. it has been trying to to do this for awhile but not this bad. any suggestions?

Pr4 ecu
PP 68mm TB w/top mount MAP

thought it might have to do with the IACV.....i unplug it and the car dies

it's running, but very poorly

took the chip out and it was alil dusty wiped it off and has ran great for 2 days  go figure

IACV is suppose to make the car die when you unplug it.

And YES it does sound like it was a wiring issue. The shaking of the wires that led to the car turning over should have been your first clue!

Yes indeed....per the Helm manual. The car bogs down and dies. Its one of the first steps involved in properly adjusting the idle.

how do you suppose one adjusts the idle if the engine dies?

all i know is to test an iacv in the event of an erratic idle, you unplug the iacv and see if the idle changes. if it continues to hunt up and down, then the problem is elsewhere. if the idle comes down and idles steady then the iacv is the problem. under no circumstance should the engine die from unplugging the iacv. also from personal experience i can attest that it does not make the engine die. so i'm just not sure why you're saying that it would.

If you would have taken the time to truly read my reply or.....looked in a Helm manual, you wouldn't have replied like you did. You sound like you are trying to challenge my knowledge when you are not actually challenging me....or my literacy for that matter. You are challenging the writers and editors of the Helm manual I own.

Unplug IACV....car dies. You restart it by turning the key and put your foot on the gas. Once it starts....you slowly let off the gas until it will idle alone (terribly low but it will idle). From there....the idle can be adjusted to 450rpm +/- 50rpm with the idle adjustment screw on the TB. This is the idle with the IACV unplugged...yes it is low....it changes dramatically once you plug it back in.

Yes I have read what you claimed about the IACV when the idle is hunting....which is not what this thread is about nor did I claim anything about the IACV function during a hunting idle.

Go unplug a correctly running engine's IACV and find out for yourself. If you find different results.....go bitch at the Helm Manual Company and start a thread expressing the lack of knowledge their writers have.....quit trying to prove me wrong on something I've personally read and done myself.

Challenging you, really? who cares where the info came from, you're the one distributing it. I simply pointed it out as being incorrect.

I wasn't being a dick to you so i don't understand why you felt the need to reply like that. i read and comprehend what you said, it's pretty simple. unplug iacv, engine dies. got it. now since i know that not to be true, i simply explained how that didn't make any sense to me.

Go unplug a correctly running engine's IACV and find out for yourself.

Since you've peaked my curiosity i decided to go test both my cars. the ls hatch and z6 ek coupe. no cel on either, and both warmed up to operating temperature. upon removing the iacv connector neither car died. idle dropped to around 500 and stayed there.

Go tell Helm Manual company. I truly think they are very reputable and the information they distribute is valid.

And no you didn't read my reply thoroughly because I stated it was one of the First steps in adjusting the idle. Helm Manual for a B18C1 states that the car will die and my B16 died when I did it to mine.

And you are still acting like a dick

d16, cafrog, both of u guys are right- alot of cars dont die when unplugging iac, but on my ford ranger it did, i know we talkn hondas though. i in fact have a bad iac on my tegg when unpluggin it it idles real low but dont die..
