Anybody know how much a ticket for "loud exhaust" is?

I think this is the right section, forgive me if it's not. But even though my exhaust is hardly considered loud especially compared to other cars, I got a ticket for it tonight. I'm just wondering how much they are in NJ if anybody's gotten one, since I've been pulled over 100 times and this was the first time anybody said anything about my exhaust.

A loud exhaust ticket is typically just a way for the police to harrass you. Unless, you were doing stupid things and making a little too much noise i.e. too many revs before shifting.

Got one myself about 6 months ago from some bubba while passing through some podunk town about 30 minutes south of where I live - half way between here and the kennel I take my G. Shep to for training. Was on the way home, took off from stoplight, went under a bridge and turned on to Interstate hwy on ramp when bubba turned his lights on. Yeah, I wound it up a ligttle tighter than I should have when passing in front of bubba. Now I make sure, when there's a Bubba in the area to cool it.

Texas law is real vague about exhaust noise. No db standard and if bubba says it's too loud you're SOL.

I took mine to a muffler shop and had them install a new cat. Asked the owner to put on receipt, excessive noise, cat burned out, replaced cat. Cost about $140.

Submitted copy of that to court and it was dismissed.

They can always find an excuse to pull you over. I've been stopped for some real asinine excuses. On the street 10 houses down from my house for "Incorrect color marker lamps" - they are blue bulbs. I told the d!psh!t the Certified Techniciian that did the State Inspection a month prior didn't think so and it was bullsh!t. He drove off, no ticket. Then a few weeks later got stopped for "Not traveling the full 100' after turn signal was activated for a lane change" - another BS traffic stop.

It's a$$holes like that that give the law enforcement community a bad name. I guess it's to be expected with the crap they deal with day in and day out that some of them would react in such a manner. I generally am polite to them when pulled over. Usually it's my fault for hauling a$$ past a radar gun!!!

Back in the day I used to love ditching them ba$tards on my dirt bike. A 400cc single two stroke that was built got the job done nicely.

It was like 1 in the morning and I was on my way home from buying an iced coffee from dunkin donuts. I feel like he just saw me driving and felt "hell his car looks like there's at least one thing I can ticket him for so I'll pull him over." To be honest and obviously I wouldn't try to fool anybody here my exhaust really isn't all that loud, especially compared to some. I have a skunk2 full exhaust with straight pipe but I have the silencer and stock mustangs have louder exhausts than mine. I even told him I've been pulled over a few times and nobody has ever said about word about my car being loud and he just looked at my inspection sticker and walked back to his car to write my ticket. I wanted to tell him how great of a job I think he's doing wasting his blank tickets for a "loud exhaust" when he could be pulling over drunk drivers, which happen to be very common in that area. Martial law I tell you.

a civic w/ exhaust is a cop magnet because of 90% of the kids who own them are douche bags.

all you can do is fight it in court.

Guess that makes me an experienced douche bag - ROFL. I got my first loud muffler ticket in 1967 riding a 3hp mini-bike with a straight pipe in the neighborhood after school with my buddies. I've been pulled over so many times I lost count 30+ years ago.

You're right, the older civics with aluminum wheels and stainless piping under them are cop magnets - I've read some guys say they hate the EF's the worst of all - probably true.

Sometimes the jerkoffs pull me over, expecting to see some 17-20 something old kid in it and it's a seasoned 56 year old bad boy. The look on their faces is priceless. One even asked me if I was driving my son's car. I answered, no it's mine. Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle.

I don't go out looking for trouble, never make excessive noise anywhere I drive - but, I really don't like it when some jerkoff wearing a uniform and badge decides it's time to phuk with the punk in the Honda.

It's a good thing the streets are uneven in my neighborhood. The Rotax in the foreground is geared for about 70 mph and the TrackMagic shifter behind it (40 hp to the ground) will do 100+ real quick. I'll GUARANTEE you they couldn't get a helicopter over here fast enough to catch me - either of these karts will smoke a police cruiser or motorcycle easily.

I don't run them in the neighborhood - never have, probably never will.

So, based on past experience and current available technology, I'm way mellowed out - but, still don't like being screwed with.

Haha thats so awesome, I need something like that. On the note of douche bag honda kids, its not to bad near me. Most of the honda dudes around me are older and have mellow exhausts and are just all slammed like mine (THAT is a cop magnet hands down). Now, the VW kids are the problem. Theyre all 17-24 or so and are driving around pieces of junk that are twice as loud as my car because they all have exhaust leaks, not aftermarket exhaust. As a matter of fact 4 of my friends drive mk1's and mk2's and they all have exhaust leaks, rusted hoods and cut springs AND failed inspection, yet I get all the attention. About to get myself a bus pass.

I'm about to put my stock exhaust back on and go to court and tell them I had an exhaust leak, not aftermarket. But I know I'll end up paying the ticket still as well as the $33 court fee.

Not sure about that - in Tx, it's treated more like a "Fix It" ticket than a noise violation. Don't know about your area.

When I put the OBX system on my hatch I kept the old rear crossover section. Also, the OBX has a baffle. If I get nailed again, don't expect to, but one never knows. I'll take it to the muffler shop and have him either install the OBX baffle or re-hang the rear section, write me an invoice for $25 that notes the work performed and "Excessive Noise" and submit to the court.

It's too bad things are the way they are and we get pidgeon holed and harrassed. I guess that just goes with the territory if you choose to own and drive a Hot Rod.

And yeah, I'll be the first one to slam a d!psh!t cop - but, I also respect most of them and treat them right. At the BBQ neear my house, they give a discount to law enforcement - I've bought a few dinners for our uniformed centurions in there when they are in line behind me and will continue that tradition.

They deserve it. Be sure and remember they all aren't pr!cks, just a few and as was noted there are plenty of douche bags out there making things worse.......

Actually I'm one of the few that defend a lot of cops, but in my area they can get really bad. I live in a pretty low crime area on the Jersey shore and the worst we have is rowdy drunks for the cops to chase but since I guess it may get a little boring so they pick on who they can.

For example my girlfriend was pulled over recently after being followed by the cop out of my town and for 2 miles before he pulled her over. He asked for her insurance license stuff and she handed it to him and he's like "got an attitude problem?" He wrote her a ticket for having an air freshener on her mirror and told her he pulled her over for swerving, and was a total dickhead.

Then again I've had cops pull me over and tell me how much they like my car and know me from seeing me driving around and to warn me I have a brake light out. It's night and day, you get good cops really doing their job then you got the ones who think they're big wigs running a square mile town and act as though you're wanted nationwide.
