what could cause me to randomly throw a rod i have eagle CRS-5394-A rods in my d16z6 with weisco pistons and on my way back from a 1 car ride the rod in cylinder 4 shot out my oil pan i wasnt low on oil if anything i had to much oil in my car...it hasnt over heated or anything just kinda weird =/

Add to that metallurgy, bad heat treating.......could have been a defective piston and wrist pin hold hogged out and slapped it to death. Wrist pin keeper, piston seized and snapped it......

Do you know where it broke? Wrist pin end or did it lock up on crank and snap at the bottom?

Snapped a little on the high side for a bearing seizure - but, could have. Most of mine have snapped closer to the crank from bearing seizure. Fortunately, I haven't blown up a Honda or anything else for that matter for a long time. If not a bearing seizure, then mine usually let go right below the wrist pin - makes for nice mess.

Did the bearing seize or not? If it was detonation, I'd say it was massive turbo type detonation with lots of boost.

I'm thinking bad rod and it flat let go.

That's nasty man - salvage flywheel and toss bottom end - maybe salvage head. Wait, he did say it went out the oil plan. I can't imagine the block surviving wtih as much rod as was left on the crank - unless it let go at the cap and flew off downwardly and kept on going.

my heads still good my blocks all fucked up it put a nice cut in the cylinder wall

How tight was it wound up when it let go?

Kinda looks like it was stressed and finally just failed.

probably a tuning issue. leanded out, or misfired, and put a ton of pressure on it.... or even injector #4 failed.

#4 is rare to pop, its usually #3.

A mid point break is common? I"ve always had them let go more towards the wrist pin and a few closer to the crank end. Again, no experience blowing up Honda's - hopefully, it will stay that way.

i've seen rods broken at the top, the middle, and the bottom.

sorry for bring this topic back up but i just remembered something......about 3-4 weeks before i threw the rod i was driving down a road in the rain when outa no where this fucking puddle atleast 6-7 inchs deep i couldnt stop in time and ended up driving threw it..could my engine have hydrolocked almost a month after? or maybe running through the puddle messed something but up since i had aftermarket rods took so long to kill them? just a random thought

No, if it hydrolocked it would have happened immediately.

It could however, have hydrauliced it and survived that - stressed it bad enough to break shortly after. It didn't do a complete hydrolock but hydraulic.

i.e. shortened it's lifespan. Done that with a few race boat motors. I've also hydrolocked them to the point of immediate total destruction.

Very plausible.

still trying to figure out wtf happend it was running fine i honestly didnt hear any knocking then all of a sudden on my way back from pa which is like 80miles my oil light turns on and my engine feels like i was trying to go in the wrong gear..

You mentioned the bearing didn't sieze on the crank. I doubt you'll ever understand why it broke. The rod may show signs of metallurgy issues - maybe not. The water incident you mentioned could have a part. The engine being boosted in a previous life may also have had a role in the failure.

Parts can be stressed in ways that shorten lifespan as has been mentioned. And, parts can just fail.
