ok.. i know how to set timing, just not sure how to use the gun w/ the dial.. i've used the other type before, just never the one w/ the dial on it..
 
well, it was at 70 btdc.. not sure how it got that high.. i reset it at 16btdc and it runs the same... if it where a tooth off would it make the mark on the crank pulley jump back and forth about 1/4 inch

the back and forth jumping, to me, sounds like either a misfire or a stretched out timing belt...
 
timing belt got changed at 100k miles.. has 140k now? Gates Blue Racing timing belt
 
Use it the same way. Set dial to "0" and rock and roll.

Degreees on the wheel set correction in the retarded direction. The electronics in the light measure frequency (RPM from sparkplug wire induction) and divide into degrees. That way they stay accurate over a range of RPM. It will delay flashing the light as many crankshaft degrees as the dial is set for.

I like them. Once timing is set where you want it per reference marks, you can pull the shorting jumper from the ECU and measure the idle advance in real time using the dial to bring the marks back to "0" on the crank pulley and read the correction degrees off the know and know the idle advance.

Agree with B16Racer on the back and forth jumping is something else all together and nothing to do with advance or retard. The relationship cam to crank and timing heil effect timing strobe sensors should be stable. If it's jumping around, something's wrong somewhere. My first suspects, cap, rotor, plug wire or heil sensor.

Try the light on another car to be sure it's solid.

someone on h-t suggested the cap and rotor as well.. it does kinda *putt, putt* a little at idle

either way, i knew the timing was off.. just didnt know by how much till today, lol.. got it fixed.. gonna recheck it tomorrow or maybe tonight after the woman gets home and see if its still at 16btdc

It's been out pretty far a time or two on the hatch and it still ran fine too. Amazing!
 
its been like this for 40k miles.. lol.. ever since her uncle changed the timing belt.. i thought he did the timing too, guess not.. lol
 
so w/ the dial gun.. i set the dial at 16 and adjust the timing to the 0 TDC mark, right?

just wanting to make sure i did it right because the woman is out driving around
 
If you want 16 degrees before TDC, yes. That's assuming the mark is indexed to TDC.
 
well i reset it this morning... i did it w/ the dial set at 0 and set it at (red) 18btdc because its the only other mark my eyes could see and it seemed too far off to be set at 16btdc

once the car cools i'm gonna check the cap and rotor. . that shit is hot right now.. lol
 
to put it all together,
if you have the correct pulley for the head you are using, you can:
A. set timing with NON-adjustable gun on red mark.
B. set timing with adjustable gun (set to 0)on red mark.
C. set timing with adjustable gun (set to 16)on white mark.
Also, if you are 1 or more teeth off on your belt, the distributor will not turn far enough to bring the marks close enough to set the ignition timing correctly.
don't forget your service jumper while adjusting ignition timing
 
Yeah - good point d-mon.

Use the light on "0" and set timing to spec. We'll do the other stuff later.

If ya "Zeroed" it with the knob set to 16 degrees then it's advanced 16 degrees.

I can't tell you how many time's I've driven off with the service jumper still installed. Sometimes remembering a couple of days later.......

took the cap off and sanded down the connections, along w/ the rotor.. they looked rather worn so i'll be replacing those and most likely plugs/wires too depending on what the plugs look like..

took it for a spin to get gas.. feels soo much better now..
