great camera. If you're looking to get a leg up, albeit with a wee bit older technology, I'll be selling my Canon Rebel XT with battery grip, 3 batteries, Kit 18-55 Lens, Sigma 70-300 lens and a shutter release remote. I'm upgrading to a 7D.

shoot me a PM although it may be out of my price range... as is the T1i right now :(

i've gotten rave reviews on alot of my PnS photos, i figure upgrading to an SLR i will just get better, especially since my SD 1100 IS is pretty much on its way out, cracked metal case, LCD is cracked, ugh. thank god for hacked firmware making the IS worth its salt.

the SD 1200 IS is looking pretty decent, all the same features (and can run my hacked FW) with a slightly larger image sensor and 10MP. $135 bucks, cheaper than my 1100 when i bought it. plus it comes in orange.

how about one of those new hybrid cameras? point and shoot capable, dslr whaen you want to

Love my D5000. The D40X (if you can find one) takes amazing pictures for the level of camera it is.

Two big factors are;

Are you just getting a DSLR because you wanna see if photography is for you, or because you already know you like it and want to try your hand with better equipment?

Which one (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Minolta etc) is more comfortable?

Those 2 questions will set a good price bracket, and give you a brand to look at, which pretty much narrows your search to 2 cameras lol.

i take tons and tons of pictures, and i take them well. i was curious about better equips.

i've had canon's all my life, they treat me well and work wonderfully. so naturally i'd get a canon DSLR. read my first post... T1i ...

I did read your first post. I too had Canon point and shoots, but feel that Nikon DSLR's are a better fit for me. Thats why I suggested them.

this guy has everything you need to get started and be happy for a good while. toss in a 50mm prime (the nifty fifty) and you'll be a happy camper.
you'll want to upgrade the body after about a year though.

the best piece of advice, is to go into a camera store and hold every camera.
as stated, you may love your previous canon cameras, but may find that the nikon/minolta/fuji/sony/etc is more comfortable and user friendly to you.

if you still decide on canon. hold the different ones.
the xti is a pretty small camera, the t1i is built on pretty much the same frame. so its kind of small.
when you get into the bigger bodies you can easily find a used 20d, 30d, or 40d for a good price well under 1000 for the body (just the camera, no lens). you can usually find a 50d new in the stores still, hold on of those, all the ones i listed are about the same size.
Those cameras have more heft to them.

narrowing it down to the brand is only a small part of the battle.

and the expensive part is the lens. thats where you are going to spend money. a good piece of glass will easily be more than your camera.

check out the fs section. you can usually find a lot of good deals there on used equip.

I have a nifty fifty as well but it rolled off my desk when I was chasing after my son. It still works but throws an Error code every so often so I wouldn't sell it as it's really not in working condition. It is one of my favorite lenses though. Luckily they're only ~80 bucks...

Turbo - sent you a pm.

thanks for the info guys. ive already put my hands on a few different cameras over the past few weeks.

im just needing to pickup a replacement soon. im definately going to pick up the SD1200IS no matter what at this point.
