So I decided to post up some pics of my project. I picked up a '93 Civic CX last year with the intentions of swapping in a different motor. After going back and forth a bunch of times between b16, b18b, ls/VTEC, and b18c, I finally came to a decision.

Here she is just begging for a swap. I was driving it back and forth between school and work for awhile since it was getting like 48 mpg lol. And don't worry, it only burns a quart of oil every couple of weeks!

This motor has a few miles one it, but it still keeps on running! Exhaust manifold is cracked right down the middle.

Looks like Santa came early! Steve at hmotorsonline hooked me up with a complete package that arrive a week or so later.

This is going to be quite the upgrade..... JDM B18C motor with tranny, axles, half shaft, shift linkage, P72 ECU, and hasport motor mounts.

Here are the mounts

Cleaning up the engine bay while I await a few parts such as timing belt, water pump, distributor cap, rotor, gaskets, seals, etc....

So this is where I am as of right now

I've been reading and researching like crazy getting ready for the wiring. I still have some questions, so hopefully I can find the answers on this site or possibly someone can chime in with an answer.

This is my first swap and I want to do things right. I'm not in any hurry since the car isn't my DD. I'm working on the car in my spare time between school and work. Been thinking about upgrading the radiator to something that's twin core with a more efficient heat exchanger. I don't plan on using the power steering on the B18C (mostly because my car never had power steering) and I ditched the A/C before pulling the engine out and I don't plan on putting it back in.

Well let me know what you think. I need suggestions/opinions for all aspects of the car (brakes, suspension, engine mods, paint and appearance...).

as for the brakes and suspension side of things, we first need to know, what is your budget and what are you going to be doing with the car... you said you have a daily driver... so i would assume this will be the toy... but are you looking to drag race with it? autocross? HPDEs? just a lot of spirited driving?

then there are other things like, how much will messy or noisy brakes bother you?
and how important is ride quality... honestly... no really?

:g: Well I don't really have a budget lol. I'm going to be reasonable and not just blow money, but at the same time I'm not dumb enough to believe the car can be turboed reliably on a few hundred dollars.

I want to go turbo down the road, but I still have a lot of research to do on that aspect. Ride quality (as far as comfort) is not as important to me since its not dd. I want to get it running so I can drive it this winter and garage my other car, then maybe next spring or so the block can head off to the machine shop and get ready to turbo. In the mean time (once the car is actually running) I am interested in seeing what others have done and liked with suspension, brakes, etc, etc.

I'm mostly in the build for the experience, although I would love to take the car to the track and get some experience on the open track days. Would like to do some 1/4 mile runs as well. These are all just things I've always wanted to get in to. I just need to formulate some solid goals.

looks like a nice start to a good build. you may be surprised how fun the car is with just the stock gsr motor in there.

you asked for advice so heres my .02....

for brakes i would look into swapping integra brakes onto it. ive never done it personally, but from what i know its a pretty direct swap.

for suspension, as long as you dont want to go really dumped (more than 2"), i would just go with some nice springs and some adjustable shocks. i have good experiences with eibach, h&r, and neuspeed springs. im sure there are other good ones, but all of these were nice for me. any progressive spring should ride pretty good. for shocks, kyb agxs have always been great for me. konis are great too, but more expensive. adjustability is nice, and in my opinion worth the money over a standard shock. adding front and rear strut braces is cheap, and does stiffen the chassis a little. for a real big effect on handling, sway bars will make the biggest difference.

if you are serious about turboing the car in the future, then plan for it now. do some research and check out other peoples build threads on the web. if you will be happy with 300whp or less (which is a helluva lot in a little fwd honda), you really dont even need to build your new gsr motor. i know a guy who made over 400whp on an internally stock gsr engine and drag raced it at the track as much as possible for over a year. when he got greedy and turned the boost up even more it finally blew. a properly tuned turbo set up can be very reliable on stock engine at reasonable power levels.

^^ I was gonna say exactly this for brakes. You do a rear disc swap from an Integra or SI, add hawk + pads or something, you'll be in pretty good shape for street. If you plan to do some real track driving in the future you might want to get something with a larger rotor/pad surface area so you aren't warping rotors after a few passes. The only point to going bigger is for heat displacement or pad options. Remember, your car can only stop as good as your tires can grip, they are the most important.

Thanks for the feedback all!

Do you suggest not only replacing the rear drums with integra disks, but also replacing the front civic disks with integra disks (I assume they have a larger rotor/caliper)?

Yeah the fronts are larger, at least on the EF vs DA. Idk about EG vs DC.

Nice....they're getting cheaper! They were $4000 for an OBD1 back in the late 90's

Man I wish I could afford that.

lolz. I talked myself out of the b18c so many times......but then I just said "f-it" and bought the one I wanted. Had a '96 Integra GSR once (until it got stolen) and I've missed that engine ever since.

Geez maybe I should have just got the ITR then!!!

So I'm thinking about picking up a different radiator and it looks like people are suggesting a del sol vetc radiator or a civic si 99-00. So my question is about the radiator hoses. Which ones do I pick up? Will del sol hoses be molded correctly to line up with the b18c? Sounds like the outlet hose size is the same for the del sol radiator and the b18c block (1.25") Hopefully someone has the solution.

^ thanks! Been looking on ebay a bit. Not sure where to pick up an actual oem del sol radiator (junk yards around here kinda suck) other than brand new so maybe I'll just go with ebay. Anyone rockin' an ebay radiator? (like the $100 ones)

So I've been doing a little bit of interior work to the car. Alot of the interior is kinda trashed and looking a little bit worn. So I figured some work was in order.

Nice purple seat covers. Only god knows why lies underneath :weep:

Well here it is.....infamous driver's seat rip

Stripped the interior down to almost nothing

figured the door panels could use a cleaning and some new fabric for now (see how I like it)

IMG_0666.jpg

IMG_0663.jpg

came out pretty decent, although I may see if I can get some vinyl (might cover the shape a little better)

IMG_0664.jpg

Figured some new seats were a must (looks kinda orange in this pic). They reupholstered leather GSR seats. Perfect fit. Maybe something lighter and more of a racing seat later........

IMG_0137.jpg

Painted some panels and such

Pulled out the nasty carpet and put something newer and fresher in

IMG_0671.jpg

Going to try some fabric out on the headliner piece (what a biatch to get out in one piece lolz)

IMG_0156.jpg

Pulled out the rear seats as well. They are going to stay out. But I'm not sure what to do for the rear area. Need to figure out something to level it off and make it look flush somehow. Any suggestions???

Here's how it turned out for now (still got a couple interior pieces to put back in)
