Been there. I've gotten cracked while being distracted or while my friends had me wrapped up pulling me away.

As for assault with a deadly weapon, it depends on his training. If he has a black belt in BJJ or another martial art he can be tried that way. If he just has general knowledge with no documentation or belts, he technically is like a regular person. Although judges can also do what they want in a situation like this.
