TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- When Buffalo Police stopped Gary Korkuc for failing to signal for a turn, they heard the mewing of a cat coming from the car.

Officers discovered 4-year-old Navarro in a cage inside the trunk. The cat had been coated with cooking oil, crushed red pepper, chili powder and salt.

Police said Korkuc admitted he planned to cook and eat Navarro. The Cheektowaga man said the cat had been acting out of control.

"When he was brought here, he was in rough shape. He was still purring, still trying to be very friendly, but having a hard time," said Gina Browning, public relations director of the Erie County SPCA.

After Navarro was rescued, he was returned to the Erie County SPCA, where Korkuc adopted him just this past May.

One local woman saw the story in the news and she showed up to give the cat a new name, and a new home.

"It gives you a burning sensation in your chest and in your stomach,” said Vickie Dankowski, who adopted the cat. “To think that someone could contemplate doing something that notorious to a beautiful gentle animal."

"I’m delighted that the cat's alright and everything turned out alright,” said Erie County SPCA Executive Director Barbara Carr. “I'm sad that someone has that kind of problem in their life, and it's probably a recurring situation."

Vickie renamed the cat Oliver. She hopes he will be a companion for her other cat.

"I’m going to give him a lot of love and attention and TLC, and I guarantee you he will be happy with me and his new sister Annabelle."

Police charged Korkuc with a count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, and two traffic violations.

As for his former cat, it appears Oliver has made it out of the frying pan, and into a loving new home.

should it be illegal to eat your animals?
i dont really understand how its ok to raise a cow or goat or turkey, which you will ultimately kill and eat, but its not ok to eat a cat?

everything tastes like chicken, eventually.........

heard this on WAAF. damn you guys are a day or two behind :)

You raise a valid point. Many animals that are raised as pets are used for a food source. Cats and dogs seem to have some exception that makes them off limits.

On the legality side of things, he's being charged with cruelty, which is entirely subjective. A jury here would find eating a cat to be cruel, unless the jury was composed entirely of Chinese. :calban: Whereas, if this guy had a duck or a lobster, the cop would've let him go about his business. I also think the cruelty is based on the fact that he put pepper on a live cat. If he had a dead cat that was seasoned for grilling, I'm not sure they could charge him as long as he killed it humanely.

I think a felony is too far. The dudes got issues, but a felony for seasoning a live cat is pretty ridiculous. A felony strips him of many of his citizen rights, which no animal is more important than.

there isn't much other use for a cat. i don't see the problem here. :shrug2:

lol *shrugs off your opinion*

They were talking about this yesterday morning on the radio, I thought it was funny. I can't even contemplate how many cats and dogs Koreans eat, so I doubt he should really be charged with any crime. It was his cat, who cares?

i just found a damn kitten in my garage.. took me forever to find it, but i kept hearing it meow.. when i found it just scared it out of the garage and it took off running.. lol.. could have been worse, i could have let my dogs find it for me.. lol.. i'm not that cruel though... but if they catch one slippin in the backyard, nothing i can do about it
