just picked up a 2000 civic hx with a d16y5 motor in it...i pretty much stole the damn thing...got it for a $1000.00...wooooohooooo!!!!!

not sure yet...its an automatic coupe and since i travel 120 miles roundtrip for work(my wife and i carpool) im trying to get most mpg and i hear the d16y5 gets great fuel economy...my plans are to get the most mpg???any ideas???

get it tuned to run a little lean. keep it maintained with fresh plugs, oil, and filters.

swap to manual instead of auto for a good 7-10 mpg increase if you baby it

the only reason i considered auto is cuz my wife and i carpool and she drops me off first then goes like 5 miles to her work...she broke her right kneecap and now its hard for her to drive stick or eeven the streetbike...her right knee only bends like 40%...so she can drive an automatic with 2 feet...and the armada averages like 15 mpg...it swallows gas b4 it burnd it...so it will have to stay auto for now...thanks thougb...

That is a hell of a deal. My O2 Sensor is bad, and is dragging down my economy something fierce. May want to cycle 50 times to make sure you don't have any reset CELs. Never thought to do the swap to a rex, but that may be pretty cool. If anything ever happens to it and you wanna part it out I call dibbs. God forbid, just saying.

1. Do a coolant flush, clean out with fresh water, drain again, then put new coolant in. Run it for a few minutes, then drain again. Get all the old coolant out of everything. (you should do a coolant flush every year, but nobody ever does.)

2. Change/clean the airfilter.

3. Replace sparkplugs with new one-step-colder sparkplugs.

4. Drain the engine oil, and once it stops dripping, pour a quart of fresh synthetic through. Put fresh synthetic oil in the engine, change the filter while you're at it.

5. Lean out the fuel map from about 35kpa to 80kpa to about 17:1 A/F. Set tip-in to richen the mix .5 to 1.0.

5. (optional) You'll probably want to keep a wideband in the car, but leave a switch on the display so you don't look ricer-ish.

These steps got me to about 60mpg in a 1999 hatch over the summer a few years back. I was driving about 110 miles a day, 80 of those were highway at a nice average of 100mph. I've done this with about 5 cars for people who drive a lot of highway, and they've enjoyed the benefits quite a bit. One person (the only one I'm still in contact with) has put over 100k miles on their 1996 civic ex with that tune/configuration.
