Interviewed for a job last week. I've got 10+ years of experience in the field, my experience fits the requirements to a T, and the interview went really well (my opinion). I was one of six people they interviewed out of 200+ applicants. They told me they would let me know within a week or so if I would be 1 of the 2 selected for the 2nd round of interviews. I get a call today saying I was the perfect candidate, I was everything they were looking for, but I live too far away and they know it wouldn't work out in the long-term, and that they decided to restart the entire process.

My commute from home to work would be about 40 miles, which really doesn't seem like that much to me, and it's literally 95% freeway. I've done plenty of hiring and interviewing in the past, and I've never called a candidate and told them they lived too far away. I honestly would feel much better if they told me I wasn't the right guy for the position, and I don't know what reason they would have to not be honest with me, so I can only assume that the distance thing was the only thing standing in the way. He went so far as telling me that if I ever moved closer that he would save my information and to give him a call.

Is this legit? Anyone ever heard of that before? Are they just trying to be nice by giving me some bs reason?

I'm planning on calling the guy back in the am and discussing it, I really have nothing to lose.

Sorry, that got a little longer than I planned.

I've just recently gone through the whole leave the military, try to find a job nonsense. I had more than one recruiter call me up and blow smoke up my ass only to never hear another thing from them again. One time I supposedly had a second interview and that things were just a matter of paperwork, then, nothing.

It probably was a BS reason given by a spinless HR type. Just remember that you are a cog in the giant global captialist machine, 100% expendable and not to be missed. Life is just easier that way...

a little update...

3 months later the guy calls me and asks if I'm still interested in the position. I say yes, he says they didn't find any other suitable candidates who lived closer, so they'd like me to come in for that 2nd interview next week, and they're looking at the 1st of the year for a start date. The other candidate they were considering lived even further out than I do. He said they had a bad experience in the past with an employee they hired that had a long commute so they're a little hesitant.

In any event, the position starts at 55k year, which would put me back at the salary level I was at before I was laid off in December 2008, and about double what I make now. Hopefully this will be an early xmas present.

good luck man
they probably wanted someone closer to handle weekend or emergency type calls so the boss doesnt have to cut his golf time short on the weekend to handle clients

i assume its in the boat repair industry right?

no, my background is in the construction/remodel industry. Everything took a shit starting about '06 around here. It's slowly starting to come back, but this is a family owned business that's been around about 100 years and is looking to expand.

Sailing is for fun, but it's ridiculous expensive.

Hmm... didn't see this thread the first time. Honestly, that's not a legitimate reason to deny you the job over someone else- it's not a merit-based reason, and could be considered discrimination. I know for sure from my years of recruiting and working with HR with all the crazy "it's not legal to ask this" kind of training we do- if we tried to deny someone a job purely on where they lived, we would be open to a lawsuit.

Congratulations on getting it though- I hope it all works out when you get there!

update to the update.

2nd interview was delayed a week, finally got in this past Wednesday and it went great. Interview was with the owner and I left with the feeling that an offer of employment would be coming in the near future. He said he would let me know either way before xmas as they are looking to get someone in the position in January.

I was hoping for an offer on the spot, but this whole process started 4 months ago so another week is no big deal. I would say I'm cautiously optimistic, but I don't want to count my chickens so to speak.

Yeah man call them and tell them you want a real excuse. Or get them to put it in writing that you live too far away and then sue them.

You're about 4 months late to the party my friend. lol

I "almost" have the job. If I were a gambling man I'd say I'm 88% confident.
