Que pasa Honda-Swappers. Tis I, Ye olde Doc_G with a new (to me) honda and in need of some answers again.

I've looked over the forums (admittedly the search function could use some tweaking) and couldn't find the info I am looking for. I've a few questions for you guys to answer and I await said answers with baited anticipation.

As you can see it's a 93 2 door accord coupe. I believe it's has a H22A6 w/an auto-tragic trans. It has a roaming idle (or surging if you prefer) that hunts from 1700 -2200 (ish) RPM. I'm betting on it either being the IAC or the TPS. It's my understanding (possibly MIS-understanding) that these cars/engines have 3 IACs and I have no idea where the TPS is hiding. I will include a few pics of what I believe the IACs to be and you guys get to tell me if I'm right or wrong (isn't this fun kids?) Ready??? Lets begin.

This is a close up of it upper intake, incase someone can point out where the TPS is located.

I know one part appears to be something fuel related, but the part that has what appears to be the throttle cable across it... I'm not really sure.

Ok so, now that I've given pictures, tried to be witty, and am holding nudes in reserve for quality answers.... Yeah daddy... bring 'em on.:cool::ph34r::cool:
 
I'll try and answer these the best I can................ First of all, that looks like a F22A, all H22's are DOHC, and most also VTEC. The TPS is at the back of the throttle body, attached to the throttle spindle which passes all the way through it. The accelorator cable is attached to the spindle at the front. The first IAC (!) is actually the FIT (fast idle thermo) valve. This contains a wax pellet which is heated as the coolant heats up and slowly closes an air passage which provides extra air on start-up. The second IAC is actually the IAC. And in the last picture the diagphram on the left is the throttle pulastion damper and the diagphram on the right is the Starting Air Valve. This supplies additional air when cranking the engine to ease engine starting. Hope this helps somehow.
 
Make sure your air filter is clean before you diagnose anything. Take off the IAC and clean it. Check vacuum pipes for cracks and holes. Check TPS with a multimeter.

Thanks for your answers, F22a it is. For some reason I've H22 stuck in my head. TPS back of throttle body. FIT fast Idle thermo valve, I've done a bit of reading and I can honestly say I understand it's operation (sort of) Clean IAC (which is second picture Thanks a bunch) is there a way to tell on these motors if it's any good (other than cleaning it and it not having changed the condition of the roaming idle) Starting Air Valve, is it possible for either the FIT or the SAV to be malfunctioning causing the erratic idle?

Will check the air filter. As for the IAC is there a gasket to be worried about? Also IIRC on my other honda there was an o-ring. Should I put a bit of vasoline on it to lubricate it before re-installing? As for checking the TPS, I'll do some searching on here to see how it's to be done.

OK so far this is what I've done/determined.

Done:

1. Removed/cleaned/replaced IAC

2. Removed/cleaned/rebuilt/replaced FITV

3. Stared at the SAV and wondered why I'd seen an engine like mine with a plate bolted in the SAV's place. Pondering deletion of the SAV altogether.


Decided:

1. Post on HondaSwap to see if anyone can give me a clue.

2. See above.

I've not messed with the TPS yet as I'm unsure how to best go about it. Either my search skills are lacking (could be true) or I'm just not searching for the right keywords. Anyone care to kick a fella in the right direction for that?

I've also checked all my vac. lines for leaks, no bubbles to report. This is driving me crazy... I like this little car, but the idle issues are about to make me pull an Elvis. Please someone think of my car, prevent that miserable fate from happening. Throw me a bone.
 
Update

I replaced both the FITV and the IAC with new components ($$$$$ :( ) and it still had the rolling idle problem. I then loosened the SAV (also known as the Air Boost Valve or ABV) and plugged the hole and voila' idle fixed. So I deleted the SAV and capped off the nipple it attached to on the air hose thus fixing my idle problem. Who'da thunk.... :rimshot:

could be the idle adjustment screw on the throttle body causing the fluctuating idle

yeah tried that before replacing components w/new ones after their respective rebuild/cleaning.
 
yea i gatta check my wifes, because she has the pissed off idle also but it stops when it is warmed up haha, just no time and i like my nuts, i dont want them to freeze off
 
You could have an air leak around the intake manifold try spraying some electronic parts cleaner around the manifold if it cuts out you found it

Turbo is going to be your best bet. Shop around and you can assemble a kit for relatively cheap.

Also, next time, consider starting your own thread next time, or at least posting on a more similar topic...
