I was chatting with a friend of mine who is a VW guy. We would up talking about Subarus, and I mentioned that I wish they made an STI wagon, which sparked the thought, would the front end off a 1st gen STI fit on a 1st gen Outback. Neither of us knew, and I was hoping someone on here would. I can't think of any Subaru guys, but I figured it's worth a shot.

not sure. ask on nasioc.

but they do have an sti wagon now ('08-'11) best platform would be to use the wrx wagon anyway if you wanted to make an sti wagon in the older body style.

if you are looking for more the 99 style like the original 2.5RS you could probly swap an outback sport (impreza based) from that gen and get the RS bumper with the big fogs... lot less BS than doing a whole front end hack on the full sized (legacy based) outback

no. the outbacks are bigger cars than the impreza.
would be like putting a civic front end on an accord, you could make it fit, if you had the funds, but it wouldnt bolt on.

im a subaru guy.
but, the new sti's are hatchbacks, fun to drive too.
but the mazda 3 whips the floor with it head to head.
in certain conditions, that may be a different story, lol.

E you're right, the RS is what I was looking for not STI.

In essence, can you put this front end

I was just curious, I can't tell which one I like better...

The sti wagon and the Mazdaspeed 3 are in close running...
From the factory- the Subaru has 224 horsepower and 226 pound-feet of torque, and is a 5 speed, and the Mazdaspeed 3 has 263 hp 280 lb-ft of torque, and is a 6 speed. The direct injected spark ignition engine gives it it's advantage there, however, the sti is all wheel drive- where the Mazda is only front wheel drive. I know from experience that from a digg, the subi can take it out the door, because it will launch while the Mazda sits there and spins (which is the current source of my frustration), but from a roll, it's on the driver to make the call- the Mazda is capable of whipping the subi there... A better rear motor mount for my Mazda is coming soon, which should reduce the engine swaying around and control my wheel hop, and hopefully get me off the line quicker. I LOVE my Mazdaspeed, but when it's paid off- I'm keeping it and buying an sti wagon- cause I want one so bad. I wouldn't ever trade my Speed for it though. :p

im not sure where you got your specs from, but those sound like they are from the WRX, not the STi.
the new STi's have about 305hp, and 290tq.
also, the STi's are 6speed.

they also came out with a STi 330s recently, it has 325hp and 344tq.

i worked at a dealership, we had both mazdas and subarus, needless to say, i love them both, and had more than my fair share of fun in them. lol.

Ah, yeah I think the info I have is outdated. Thanks for the update lol.

Still though- I wish my car was an all wheel drive. That would make my track days so much better... that would be my biggest complaint about my car, and really that's the only one I have now that the factory wheels aren't on it anymore.

I have yet to drive an sti, we don't have a subi dealer really close to here... My hubby worked for Mazda when we bought ours- he was a Speed certified tech, but since then the dealership has closed, so we also do not have a local Mazdaspeed authorized dealer. Bummer :( We do, however, seem to have one of those big 4 inch thick tech books on the Speeds, along with a couple of others... How did those get in our house?

Also- in the complaining department, I went to the local Honda dealer to drive a CR-Z just out of sheer curiosity, and they friggin don't have a 6 speed on the lot. Ugh. Needless to say I didn't test drive a cr-z.

I really can't get into Mazda, I know theres a cult following but... meh.

That's ok... I only speak for myself here- but around my area the Speed 3's are rare, and I love it that way. When we are out and about and we see one that we haven't seen before, we gotta scope it out and all, look at the tag to see where it's from, and get kinda mad if it's a new one from our area lol. Just don't buy one and move to 39475. ;)

Seriously though- the sti wagons are SWEET. I think you would probably love it. I am addicted to hatchbacks/5 doors/whatever... I will never go back to a sedan. This is my 2nd hatch- I had a Protege' 5 before this one, until someone t boned me. :(

Had an Explorer lol, other than that, I've never had a hatch.

Yeah, I loved the speed 3s. For the money you coulnt beat it. Over 10k less than the Subaru and very competitive to it. Living in the south the awd isn't needed, but trust me, it's nice to have lol.
The biggest issue I had with the speed was torque steer. The spinning is controllable if you know how to launch in a fwd good.
My buddy would race me in the sti all the time while we worked at the dealers. He could never beat me. Even from a stop. We were pretty comparable in skill too.

well, maybe he wasnt as good of a driver as i was.

but, i still like them both. and for the money, the mazda 3 is a better choice over the sti. glad that they decided to redo the wrx though, the sedan only thing was shitty.
I have not test drove the new speed 3, i havent worked at that dealership in a year, so i missed the newest stuff. i just cant believe they didnt turbo the new 2.5ltr engine instead of sticking to the old 2.3.

also, the speed 3 always seemed to get bouncy past 100mph, i didnt like that. needed better suspension really. but it handled curves well enough.

Yeah the torque steer is a bitch in the Speed3. I remember the first week I got it. Leaving work I crossed into a median, took a left turn onto the hwy, and punched it pretty hard. I almost went in the grass on the left side. That's only happened once- since I had no idea it was going to do that- but you really have to hold the wheel if you're gonna get on it hard.
I live in South Mississippi, so yeah- the awd isn't a necessity, but it's just cool to have lol.
I never had any trouble getting off the line in my crx, but this Mazda is just giving me hell. I have changed and tweaked and changed and tweaked, and I either bog, spin, or wheel hop... I will get it eventually- after that stiff motor mount goes on I think it will help. It's my daily driver so I don't beat it up over and over at the track also. Still- super fun car. :D

We put the mazdaspeed springs on it- it helps a lot. I have got it to 150 before I let out because it started getting sortof unstable. I'm not a huge fan of driving that fast...

I personally do NOT like the new speed 3. I mean- yeah it's got stuff that I wish the '08 would have had, but it's so dang ugly imo. It looks like it's smiling at you all the time. Bleh.

yeah, the new speed 3 is not worth getting at all. the performance is essentially the same. and the older ones look much better.

just sucks... all these cars that used to be small are getting huge.
