New Parts and Now Vibration Under Certain Acceleration

Let me start off with....sorry this is a long one. I have ran out of options.

This all started with the fact that I needed new Axles and had a bad driver's front wheel stud. never done a wheel stud before. I changed the wheel stud by taking the brake caliper and disc off. Then I cut the bad one in half with an angle grinder....popping it out and putting a new one in that I ground down an edge and froze over night. It went in nice....but I did hammer it while spinning a nut to make the stud seat completely. Didn't seem to be a big deal. Put a new axle in on both sides (O'Reilly-Kragen brand new axles). Then I went to the rear and put a brand new Benen lower tie bar on with the new bolts I had to buy for the extra thickness of the Benen bar.

So I test drove it and felt a vibration under acceleration at lower rpm's (like 1800-3000 mostly). Felt like the driver's side more than anything. It reminded me of a shimmy you get with bad shacks on a launch....just much less intense. Almost an up/down motion...but this is just my best assessment.

I jacked it up and checked for play in the wheel. Nothing. Then I checked the bolts that I remember tightening well in the first place....no problems (was hoping it was just a loose nut!). I got under it and looked at where the driver's axle connects to the half-shaft. It was out about a 1/4" (maybe less) but I slide it and it seated in but I could also slide it back out a 1/4" pretty easy too. I then checked it from the top when the wheels were on the ground and it didn't move at all. Passenger side didn't move at all. I don't know if this is normal and I have never had a problem when I have put axles in (done it on my hatch 4 times). No vibrations or anything. So I never checked for play in the axles.

I googled around and my car's symptoms seems to usually be a loose bolt or bad axles. But my bolts have been checked and my axles are brand new. I also took a pry bar to the various suspension parts and don't feel any play there either.

I do have old KYB shocks but have rolled on really bad shocks before. I think I would hear some noise if the wheel hub bearing was bad from my hammering on the wheel stud (3 friends have thought the same). My alignment....wasn't sure but I talked to a tech at a alignment shop and he doesn't think its that.

It can't be the new lower tie bar??? I googled it and found no threads related to the rear lower tie bar. I am tempted to take it off but I kinda feel stupid thinking its the problem.

maybe get a new axle from O'Rielly??

ANY OTHER IDEAS???

Okay I drove it some more and I think I have narrowed it down some. It seems to vibrate under myself and to the left (I can hear the stuff in my door pocket vibrating). It also seems to only do it under 40mph but have felt it even in second gear accelerating pretty hard up to 40mph and seems to fade out.

So it must be something with the axle or the mid-shaft?? I really dont think its the hub bearing. It would do it in neutral or whatever.

Can it be a seal in the mid-shaft? Is the 1/4" play in my axle (that I wrote about in the above post) not 'normal'

EDIT: It shouldn't matter if they're ABS axles..??? I didn't pop the ring off but I've read other threads expressing it doesn't matter if the ring is on.

Might as well try a new one. They should be cool giving me another one. Probably need to give a deposit and bring them my other one.

EDIT: I bought the axles for a GSR but it doesn't matter that its a B16 transmission

yeah its the axles, my brother went through 3 or 4 till he got a new one that worked for a while then he had another vibration and turned out to be the bearings in the diff. inside the trans.

Got a new driver's axle from O'Reilly's. Paid for it but they'll give me my money back on the other one when I take it to them. He was quick to agree that it could be a faulty axle too. Hope this is the fix. I'll throw it in this afternoon.

Probably your axles. I replaced both of my with brand new ones when I did my clutch job a while back. I developed a shake under certain rpms like you have roughly between 3000-3500. I replaced wheel bearings and tires with no improvement. I believe in my case it is going to be a sticking inboard joint. Fuck auto part stores axles!

I cannot get the damn axle out of the half-shaft. everything else is loose and axle is ready to come out. My arms are jello right now so I'm resting lol. Gonna tap on it with a rubber hammer (per Helm's manual) and if that dont work....I'm taking the half-shaft out.....watch that be a pain in the ass too!

Well....that did NOT fix it! I do not know what to do now. All I can do is new bushings, new hub bearing, new half-shaft?????? I am pretty pissed off.

It seems really odd that the brand new axle was bad and now even more odd that it was two in a row???

To check hub bearing jack front of car up making sure to set E brake and block tires. Grab the wheel at the 9 and 3 O clock positions and try to wiggle back and forth. Now do the same thing only at 12 and 6 O clock. If there is any movement either your hub is bad or inner tie rod is bad. 2 bad axles in a row is unlikely. 12 and 6 is tie rods could be the outer also. 9 and 3 is hub.

if the bearings in the quaff are bad then it will cause it to shimmy, my brother went through the same problem he replaced his axle 3-4 times i would have the trans checked if the wheel bearing are not the problem.

No movement in the wheel when on the jack. Tie rods and lower ball joints are relatively new (last summer).

I feel it in the left side but maybe I'm biased. Gonna jack it up and run the car in first gear to look/listen. Also gonna have a passenger roll with me and feel the other side. Maybe it was the other axle??? I am a little lost :-(

I am thinking about buying a new set of axles from Reibes. I bought from them when I replaced the axles with my B18B1 and had no problems. O'Reilly is going to take the three I bought back. Going to get a new set ring too.

New axles from different company and its still there. I can say its not the axles. I am going to take that stupid lower rear tie bar off and try it.....my dad wont leave me alone about it so I'm going to yank it off tomorrow. And if that ain't it......my options are live with it and hope it don't get worse or take it to a shop.

ok don't listen to me i have said it twice if its not your axles then its in the trans. but oh well don't listen to me ive just been working on hondas for 12 years... i dont know shit

Transmission was fine before so its hard to think new axles made this happen. I am also trying to stay away from buying a $500 transmission. It feels like the vibration is coming from the driver's side too. Im thinking its something in the suspension/bushings or the half shaft. But I have no movement so it might be the transmission. I do not want to guess anymore.....I am frustrated.

I appreciate any help/ideas but you don't have to act like an a-hole. Why you decided to write the way you did (your post was sarcastic and condescending)....I have no idea but I do know it was unnecessary. I am trying to exhaust all other (cheaper) possibilities first.

I am going to talk to a transmission specialist in my town tomorrow. We'll see what they can offer me in terms of diagnostics. They have a free "external" diagnostic service that I am going to see how free it is lol.

Passenger axle popped out from the transmission! Tranny fluid around it and everything. I am 100% sure it was seated all the way in before. I popped it back in on the side of a dirt road.....eff! Luckily I was able to get someone to bring me a jack and stands so I could look under it. I was able to get it back in a seated. This is something on the other side of the car! I don't know what the hell is going on now. Could be the bearings at the transmission or something else.......I just want to figure out whats wrong so I can fix it!

Drove about 40 miles home.....crossing my fingers the whole time. It was either get it home or keep it at my parents (out of town) and have my dad take it to a shop in his town or get it home and take it to a shop myself.

Gonna tell the transmission shop what I've done and see what they say. If its too pricey and it is something with the transmission; I'll probably get another transmission.
