ok so i need opinions...92 accord 5 spd. we go to put it in reverse and it grinds when we release the clutch, if i fight with it for a while i can get it to go into reverse and move in reverse for about 4 feet max than it grinds and obviously stops moving. i dont know if it is the shift linkage or the blocker rings in the trans. it is REALLY TIGHT going into first and second a lot also, and when in neutral it is very tight when you move it towards the right side, any help would be great.....thank you

Reverse issue sounds like bent gear fork(single fork that actuates reverse gear).

What do you mean by tight?

Check where the shift cables attach to the transmission. I believe there are bushings there that are prone to wearing out. I had to replace the cables in my dads 94 Accord due to them being stretched out and causing similar problems... Except it wouldnt shift into 1st 3rd or 5th.

yea iv seen this issue..

what i meanby tight is it is stiff when you shake it in neutral, when you move the shifter to the right towards reverse and 5th gear its much stiffer, hard to explain, but i may have fixed it, i have to wait for her to get out of work and pick her up, because she has the only key at the moment:( , but what i think it was is the heater hose was lodged against the shift cable, so i moved it and maybe that fixed it, ill keep updating......

ok so the update is that it did not work, basically you feel and hear it go i geuss half way in but that two click feeling you get when you put it in reverse does not come i feel it budge once and thats it, i hope it is not the trans, any ideas?

it seems like im updating to myself hahaha but those who are keeping updated.......i think i found the problem.;) when the wife got home i told her to keep the car running and pop the hood, and i told her to "put it in reverse" so she did and i told her slowly release the clutch and just like normal she grinded but i mainly wanted to see which way the shift linkage moved on the trans to try it by hand on the trans, so i had her put it in neutral and had her keep the clutch it, and i tried to put it in reverse by hand on top of the trans, and had her slowly release the clutch once again, and "ta-da" she tired to move backwards with the e-brake on. and she stayed in reverse faithfully, usually by the shifter i was able to get her in reverse after about fifteen minutes and move about 1-3 feet then it pops out but the e-brake kept a lot of pressure on it and she stayed in, so now i am going to put in our new shift linkage in when i got off work next which is monday and teusday, like typical, ill keep updating.

Diag is fun haha

so i can still shift it into reverse by hand on top of the trans but no luck with the shift linkage. so we are going with that the synchro or the blocker ring is fucked, so hopefully we can find one at the junk yard:mad:

They're no synchro for reverse; it should just a "fork" looking thing that drops an "idler gear" to engage reverse. You run into problems engage reverse when this part becomes out of spec/bent.

think logically for a minute...

you can shift it BY HAND on top of the trans..........

but you CAN not shift it using the GEAR SHIFT.........

Hmm... did you infact change the shift cables or are you wanting to pull the transmission for almost no reason.

He said he already tried a new linkage. I'm guessing this insinuates that R has to be moved further or closer than the cable is allowing(given the description of the problem and "solutions"). The extra resistance when going to the right in reverse may be pulling it out of reverse(have you tried to hold the lever down in reverse and see if it'll still pop itself out?)

Did you look at the linkage while in reverse? Also, with the cable linkage still in, could you "coax" it into reverse? And, is it still "tight" with the new linkage? With the cable not hooked up to the transmission, the lever should move around very freely. Also, you said you manipulated it by hand; was it easy to do so?

well, i can get her to go into reverse but it actually doesnt fully engage like i thought, we brought it into my work for inspection and we took out the reverse switch on top of the trans and we actually can see that the fork does not move far enough, so either it is bent or something it restricting it, so we are going to go to the junk yard when i get paid and pick up a new trans and i will just rebuild the trans thats in the car now on my free time with racing internals, because eventually it is going for boost
