Hey HondaSwap

so i have already looked through all the searchs and forums for what im looking for and just need help.

I have a 92 eg hatch and have the stock sohc in it thats about to go, so i have no choice but looking to get a new engine or sell the car. I have about 3gs saved and was looking on weather to do a B16 swap or save up and do a gsr swap? the last couple days i saw defferent things about the b20v and thought about that. it seemed like that was a better route to go for a all motor weekend car. If i do the b20vtec i could do a port and polish head and upgrade all the internals for about 4g or cheaper. What have you guys done in the past and what works and what doesnt? also is there any decent websites for upgrading the engine. This wasnt a swap i wanted to do till summer of 11 so i didnt do all the research i normally do. I have about a month left till i need to do the swap.

also if theres anything im missing please feel free and leave a comment. Im not trying to waste your time im just in a time crunch and wanted to keep my car and since i have some money saved i wanna use it one this vs spending it on something else.

id do an ls or an ls/vtec swap, im running an ls/vtec and i love it! its got the top end of the b16 but with more torque. its great. i had a b16 in my car before so i would recommend an ls/vtec with a b16 or gsr tranny

im going to do a b16 or gsr lsd and i considered the ls but everything i read ppl liked the b20 better... and i just got done reading about ur eg you just got and put a ls in it from the 4dr. i was just getting ready to pm you to see how you liked it... lol...

I would also go with a Ls Vtec or a B18C. If you have the money the Type R motor is great. I have a B18B1 in my EK now and it is fun but after a while I wanted more HP.

Could i do a built lsv for the same price as a b18c? Well not comp. built but still a decent bottom and top and maybe port and polish? When i was last night i found many b18 blocks for like 300 - 500 on cl and found a port and polish head for 550 on cl in my area as well... i just want to make a good hp engine that will beable to take off from low speed as well as fast... then maybe next year redo it and turbo it. i think my power goals would be 200 - 250 and ik thats pretty decent for a civic...

Thank You Every One Soooo Far.....

its feasible to have a built LS-VTEC for about 3k, but getting it in the car for that same budget might get somewhat tight.

why would you build an engine, only to rebuild it later and go in a different direction? if I were you, id decide what you want right now, and build accordingly at this point in time.

the wise thing to do would be to find GSR or B16 that hasnt been opened up(from an importer) and swap it in there. That way you retain the reliability that Honda is known for, and theres no headache in trying to figure out which parts will work, and which wont.

I might just do the gsr... Where are great websites for performance parts for the engines and some decent jdm stuff.?.... i found horsepowerfreaks and passwordjdm.... anything else?

ebay has all the performance parts you could imagine, and youll get decent deals on new stuff. just search up name brand parts, and avoid ebay knock off parts.

if youre going to do a gsr swap, the first mods i suggest are a new timing belt, water pump, accessory belts, and replace some seals and gaskets (exhaust manifold gasket, IM gasket, cam seals, etc) freshen the engine up to ensure that its going to last you a long time. then worry about modifications.

I agree with Matt about changing parts to freshen it up. Matt goes a little further then I would (IM gasket, cam seals)
But heed his advise....its safe and great piece of mind. I'll add cap/rotor (but it can be done after the swap too).

And I would get a GSR swap for sure. I have a B16 and wish I did the GSR instead.
LSD is a good choice too.

The will be a big change for you and your EGg! No doubt.

GSR swap will fit your needs. LS VTEC is a neat idea, but needs to be done right. The GSR/ITR B18s already put a lot of stress on the motor at high revs due to r/s ratio, LS VTEC is even worse with longer stroke, shorter rods. I'm partial to the B16b for it's design and craftsmanship, but it's not the best $/hp value, the GSR is. A simple B18b (LS) will give you tons of torque over your stock motor cheap, you can also get older JDM B16As for pretty cheap, good for 170hp. You have a small, light hatch, anyone will be fun, B16s give you HP, GSR gives you high reving HP with low end torque (below VTEC more than ITR).

I tell you from doing this my self, B20Z2 with a B16 tranny. I am just going to leave it at that and see what the rest say. However, if you can't find a B20Z2 then look for a JDM B20B with a P8R head.

^^ That will shit and get out of the hole but 4K rpm's in 5th going 70mph ain't too great for a motor built to rev 1000+ rpms lower than a B16A

ill say it once more, buy a complete GSR swap from a reputable site such as Hmotors, freshen it up, drop it in there and see how you like it.

the gsr offers the best of the b-series IMO, decently geared tranny (wont bore you like an ls, or eat your gas like a b16), decent low, mid, and upper range power, tons of potential, and its reliable if you treat it nicely. what more could you possibly want?

Tell me about it, I had this set up along with Crower 404 cams and head work.

I could see a good driver getting sub 2 Second 60 foots with street tires with that set up! But not the highway driver kind

exactly, i have a b16 trans and an LS in my car, and it is not pleasant to drive on the freeway. which is exactly why it is not a daily driver.

thank you everyone!!!! i just took the car to the shop and they tore out the motor and painting it.... i was considering the type r for a little while and yes its a nasty engine but damn its expensive... i will be getting it from hmotors since thats the only decent place i found so far... i have done plenty of research and each engine has its pros and cons.... the b16 and gsr seem the better routes to go..... does anyone know hoe much a place charge to do a wire tuck? i just thought about that this morning....

thanks again everyone

wire tucks are going to vary based upon the shop, and how well the work is done.
a wire tuck can be done many different ways:
1) correctly, soldered and shrink-tubed connections, battery relocated, fusebox tucked, brake lines hidden, etc etc expect to pay upwards of $500 for this to be done due to the extensive amount of labor involved

2) half-assed. butt connectors/quick splices, minimal things tucked away, etc etc.. price here would probably be lower but you get what you pay for.

IMO, a wire tuck is NOT something I would trust ANY shop to do on my car. I did it myself, so if I have to trouble shoot I know where to look and/or what to look for.

and (for the 3rd time) id say that a GSR is your best option. i wish I had gone with a gsr swap.
