So- I'm thinking about rooting my phone, cause I am frustratingly stuck at 15 apps, and there are more that I want, but I keep getting a message saying "your device is extemely low on memory". I have been through my apps a dozen times, and don't want to delete anymore of them. If I root is- I can get rid of the apps that came on the phone pre installed that I can't delete, and store apps to my sd card to free up phone memory.

Has anyone else rooted an HTC phone here? I have the Desire. I just am kinda scared of bricking my phone- then I will be screwed...

I rooted my G1. I would definitely root it and get one of the custom 2.2 Froyo ROMs. I thought even 2.1 had Apps2SD? Anyway search XDA forums for how to root your model phone and then choose a ROM that gets good reviews and has Apps2SD.

Rooted HTC Incredible here with Virtuous OS(pretty much stripped down stock OS). Neighbor down the street has a rooted HTC Evo with CyanogenMod OS.

I believe 2.2 allows the option of some programs to be installed onto the SD card. I know in the menu it has the option to move current/existing programs(though not all).

I think I am running 2.1- don't think my carrier has come out with 2.2. I know I don't have an option for apps to sd cause I went over there and asked about it. All they could tell me was "delete some stuff", and "you can buy the Samsung Galaxy- it has apps to sd option". HA.

Anyways- thanks for the pointer to the XDA forum- I will check that out. Are the instructions pretty straightforward? I am pretty technologically smart but I haven't messed with smartphones a lot and want to be sure I'm not going to screw my phone up.

It depends if you find a good thread with good instructions. I'd follow Cyanogen's writeups for rooting, then choose the ROM you want, though Cyanogen also has good ROMs.

If you're allowed to download programs at work, yes it's safe. It's just a small program that unroots the phone for you.

IIRC Unrevoked should automatically install Superuser...at least it did for I(unless it was included in the ROM and I didn't notice it before).

go here

After that go to the market and download Superuser or

You probably going to have to install a ROM after that will deodex your phone

Thanks. I'm going to try to do this today. I hope it works cause I need to free up some space on my device memory.

it's not the end of the world if you Brick, just make sure you have all the tools downloaded to restore your phone BEFORE you try to do this.

i've bricked my phone like 10 times AT LEAST, trying to install different things

For my Droid X i just needed RSDlite program to connect to my phone from windows(version), the usb drivers for my phone for windows(version) and a .SBF version of the "stock" operating system to flash it back into the phone. i got all this from those forums

Not sure how it works with HTC phones but i'm sure it's a similar process.

You're phone isn't bricked until it's broke for good.

no sir, not according to WIKI

In the strictest sense of the term, bricking must imply that software error has rendered the device completely unrecoverable without some hardware replacement. However, it is common to use the term for a problem which can be rectified but only by a complex and difficult procedure, often requiring additional software.

Wiki definitions
Brick means that your phone is now a worthless brick, not a phone that requires lots of fixing, it's a lifeless brick, none of the buttons work, the screen doesn't come on, nothing happens when you connect it to a computer, exactly like a brick. Nothing can turn a brick into a phone again, so if you fixed it, it was never bricked.

A friend of mine had an HTC Hero and got a virus on it. It wouldn't do anything at all. I went on HTC's site and reinstalled the software- it returned his phone to original settings like the day he bought it. Would this same procedure work if I somehow messed up the root?
