I prefer leather wallets but do they all leave this black tar-like substance all over the cards? I've had this wallet for maybe 5 years now and I can clean the cards, etc, and it'll still get this build-up or whatever it is.

What is this crap? Also, do all leather wallets do this(I've had 3 leather wallets and all of them does this, though one was not bad)? Also, my DL is fading even though I rarely take it out.

i've always had leather wallets and never had any problems like that. where did you get it from? I have a nice Kenneth Cole one from Macys it was like $45 bucks.

I have no clue, it's been so long. Might have been Walmart or Macy's(or some other place in the mall). I guess I'll just get a new one. Your Kenneth Cole, how long have you had it?

The last few I've had were leather wallets from family in Costa Rica. I have the same problem after a while. im guessing its oils from the leather coming out in the heat/pressure of our pocket. Depending on how well the leather is treated probably has a lot to do with it. Some "sleeves" are just coated in the outside, not the inside which actually contact the cards.

The cards that just came out of my $20 leather wallet have some markings on them. Guess i never noticed before.

Depends onthe leather. I got my wallet as a gift. Stupid expensive. Something I wouldn't buy for myself. No black stuff here. I did with my cheapo target special and even with a fossil wallet i had.

cheap leather wallets will do that.

the leather wallets i would get from walmart would do that, they were "genuine leather" but they had this coating on them that would start peeling off, and it would leave black shit on all my cards.

i now have a paper wallet, there are no black marks.

yeah???
homemade???

i made one from an express mail tyvek envelope from the post office... its been standing up pretty well but ive only been using it for a little over a month
absolutely love this thing so far... with the same contents its half as thick as my old leather wallet (about 1/2 inch vs just over 1 inch) hardly even notice its there now

I have a bi fold kangaroo skin wallet and have no problems with it. But I rarely have my wallet in my pocket though. I carry a Maxipedition back just about every where I go and my wallet sits in there. If it does go in a pocket it goes in the front.

that duct tape wallet is going to get gluey shit all over the place... then the threads are going to start creeping out... then the corners and edges are going to start moving and peeling... then you have gluey shit and threads all over your pocket and wallet contents... no thanks

You need to rub super glue over the seams in the ductape wallet if you want it to last for a while. That will keep the ends from fraying.

yep.
and i like the paper wallet, but my only complaint is mine only has the two sideways pockets on the inside, makes it a bit of a pain to get the cards out.

i think though, im going to make one out of a coffee bag, more durable, and would just be nifty. that way, when i sweat my ass off in the unbearable heat we will be getting this summer, i know that the wallet can handle it.

Yeah...looks like I'll be heading to the mall this weekend for a new wallet. I could ask my aunt though; she works at Macy's!

Though, are there any good/reputable brands? This is assuming some items may just be "rebadged" cheap stuff.

i got it Christmas 2009 but before that i had a Similar one for 8 years that i got at Filenes

i was looking at the Carhartt ones when i was at a store a few months back.... they looked like nice wallets, but i will say they are BULKY

I've never seen any Carhartt wallets here; but I'd assume so since they make pretty rugged stuff.
