I'm looking to go with my girlfriend for her 25th birthday in May.

I hate the idea of the all inclusive places over by Cancun and Playa del Carmen with people basically staying at the resort the whole time and not experiencing the local culture and scenery. Plus I don't really want to be in a place over flowing with tourists.

Because of that I'm hoping to go to a place like Isla Holbox. Its about a 2 and a half hour drive from Cancun to Chiquila and then a short ferry ride over to the island.

I'm looking at staying at one of the small hotels right on the beach.

:: Holbox Hotel Mawimbi - Holbox Island - Mexico ::

Holbox: Hotel Isla Mexico

There are no cars on the island, just golf carts. There seems to be lots of stuff to do, and we'll be there right when the whale sharks arrive. Swimming with them would be awesome!

Anyone been around this area before? I've never been to Cancun/Playa so I'm just researching a lot now to find a good place to go. Tulum also looks like a fun place away from the crowds of Cancun.

from my experience its not always such a good thing to go much off the beaten trails lol

when i was down in mexico with my brother on a cruise we got off the boat at one of the stops and found a guy to rent a golf cart from to drive around...
the town was very nice, but as soon as you hit the dirt road you came upon the shanties, and the shifty looking mother fuckers, and more people trying to sell you coke or ice than you can shake a stick at

what a trip
and chickens
so many fucking chickens running around
and you're fucked if you run one over with a golf cart
that chicken is someone's dinner/pet/property
apparently we got too close to one of those fuckers all darting around like it was methed up
i didnt understand wtf they were saying but we were out of there

i'm not a fan of mexico right now. too much shit going on. i might consider a high end resort near a beach, but about 90% of mexico is considered off limits to me. there are too many other places you can go that have a decent government and don't have drug wars going on.

+1

Local scenery and culture isn't always a good thing.

Maybe I'm more of the adventurous type, but none of the drug war stuff really seems to matter to me especially in the area that we'll be in. I've been to two different border towns in the last few years and it seems to me that generally as long as you're not looking for trouble you won't get into any.

From everything I've been reading all of the areas we're looking at going are generally safe and not really anyone talking about the areas online have any sort of trouble. I know there are other areas, but Denver to Cancun airfare seems very reasonable and its nice that you don't have to spend all day traveling, 5 hours and you're there.

We should start taking up collections now to pay your ransom to the sinola cartel.

even I wouldnt go man.

good luck if you do and remember that you're not in the US anymore.

Its so bad right now, military personnel are barred from going anywhere in Mexico. That should tell you something.

From everything I've read servicemen are only barred from border areas and even then its up to the base commander to approve/deny the leave request.

I'm not going to be anywhere close to the border areas, in fact I'll be more than 1,500 miles away from the closest border town.

I've traveled plenty outside of the US both to well off countries and pretty shady areas. Hell I've been to Haiti twice for 10 days at a time and never had a problem or felt unsafe. I know I won't be in the US anymore and as such there are precautions that I will take to make sure we are safe, but I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

In my mind, saying that you won't travel to Mexico at all because of the drug violence is like saying you won't travel to the United States because of the violence in major cities like LA, Chicago, Detroit, and Washington D.C.

Thanks guys for your concerns, but I think at this time I see no reason not to travel to Mexico.

ummmmm......actually i wont. lol

A big diffrence between traveling to LA, Chicago, Detroit and Washington is your not targeted simply because of your skin color. A rule of thumb for most countries is White = Tourist. Tourist = Money. I've never been south of the border so I dont have much to say about your destination but good luck and be safe.

That is true Drake, and is definitely something that I think about and that everyone should think about when traveling. But I've been places where I stick out like a sore thumb and have never had any trouble. I'll take precautions like I won't travel at night. I won't go to areas that I don't know well. I also won't bring anything really flashy that will attract attention.

I see your taking your gf. The cartels will like that. Does she enjoy lots of attention? How is she with animals? Is she familiar with donkeys?
