Figure I'd post this cause the rage from 3pm still hasn't left me.

So I bought a new Xbox 360 without the hard drive. Read that I can read thumbdrives for game saves and map packs. Found a good deal on some 16G drives I know will work, so I ordered them via newegg.

All bueno except this Verified By Visa thing. Now I really like the concept, but I hate how annoying the damn thing is. Like most tech geeks I have about 5 different passwords that I only use for things that store my credit/billing info. I went through 3 on this thing and then it locked me out.

No biggie, I called the number on the screen to get the password reset.

Of course the IVR sends me to the wrong department for this kind of thing, but what else can you expect these days. I get to the right department and the dude asks me for my Card number and the last 4 of my social. Cool. Then he asks me for my address.

Let me preface this with the fact that I am logged in to my online banking and specifically clicked on my addresses to read them off. I haven't lived at 2 of the addresses in years and really have a tough time remembering them.

After READING THE FUCKING ADDRESSES off the screen on my online banking site this guy decides to tell me that I haven't given him an accurate address. No worries, he has other ways to verify me.

He tells me he is going to ask me questions based on my public record. This is where things get interesting.

So a lot of you guys know my name is Josh (short for Joshua, duh). He proceeds to ask me: "What is another first name you have gone by":

A) Daryl
B) Corwin
C) Timothy
D) Fredrick
E) Josh
F) None of the above.

I tell him Josh and then 'His computer crashes and he has to send me to another tech'. That scenario didn't seem too crazy until...

I get this woman that tells me that I didn't pass address verification and I need to do a secondary verification, and of course here comes the same question as last time.

I answered again, with the name Josh, and she tells me that Josh is the incorrect answer and that she would have to end the call.

Now....here I am...in the middle of a completely open work area. over 300 people within a hundred yards of me (no cubicles, or offices for any staff at my company not even the CEO), and I completely fucking lose it on this woman. She tries to tell me that it isn't common for people named Joshua to go by Josh and that does not HAVE to be the right answer. I'm actually curious to see how many people on HS know someone named Joshua that doesn't go by Josh.

After multiple F bombs, some jabs about her legitimacy of birth and other profanity's I must have muttered the word supervisor cause low and behold I get transferred to someone else.

I was, admittedly, still pissed when I got to said supervisor and told him the same thing I told the woman about the Josh/Joshua thing, and luckily this wasn't this dude's first rodeo. He put me in my place in a calm and professional manner and was like 'Look, this isn't the end of the line, there is still one more way you can get your password changed. Do you know the PIN number for your debit card.' Dumb struck I found myself nodding at my desk and not actually responding to the question, but I guess he knew the crackle of a nod over the phone and put me through to the balance checking line.

Entered my card number. Entered my PIN. Voila now he can change my password.

I just want to know why that's not the first thing they do on these is have you verify that shit through the IVR and avoid all the stupid fucking questions of doom.

45 minutes later, I FINALLY get my thumb drives ordered and all is right in the world.

TLDR:

Don't forget that password for Verified by Visa. It's a bitch to change.

He was ordering thumb drives too.....

My story was with chase and not newegg though. Therefore mine wins and no repost. wewt.

I don't so much mind the aspect of it being there cause I knew what it was and what it was for, just sucked that I got locked out after 3 fails. At least gimmie 5 please. kthx.

how about dont set up a password in the first place? you dont ever have to do it. occasionally i'll get a little verified by visa redirect when ordering something online. every time i just close out of it and continue my order. i already put in all my fucking credit and billing info when i placed my order, im not jumping through more hoops to buy something.

I forget what bank it was, but I was going through those same security questions online and it didn't take it because when I typed in the security answer originally I didn't put a space between the two words, so when I did it while trying to verify my identity, I did put a space between two words. The site literally locked me out because of that damned space.

Ian I've never been able to set up an account without some sort of security question.

no im not talking about not setting up a security question, im talking about not setting up an account at all.

verified by visa is completely optional. you dont have to do it.

you're right it is optional, but my order hits 'confirmed' faster if you do it. otherwise it stays in pending for upwards of 24 hours. my stuff is already shipped and had i not done it, i wouldn't have usb keys for the weekend (unless i paid more for shipping than one of the dirves).

i'm with you on this one
fuck verified by visa

newegg had visa change their pop-up shit so now there is an option to continue with your order without having to enter your vital info (SSN info)
i am still fighting it out with verizon, they are on the verified by visa thing with no option to skip signing up for it, and if i close the window it says they cannot complete my transaction
i have a week to get it straight or i might just go to the store to pay my bill or do it over the phone
fuck you visa

i saw no change in my processing time when i skipped the verified shit
the order i selected to skip verify for actually came sooner than the other order, but i assume that was just product placement in a warehouse closer to me

and back to the OP
what type of drive do you need? I just picked up a 4GB xbox 360 for a steal and have 16gb and 8gb thumbs i can borrow from work

I had a moment with Chase this morning too. :D

I set up my joint Schwab account with the fiance as a transfer account last night, and Chase said they'd do the usual 'make two small deposits and tell us the amounts to verify' thing. I notice the deposits in the Schwab account this morning, so I go and enter them at Chase. Only Chase doesn't have a record of their own deposits yet... says I need to wait 2-3 days for a record of their own deposits to go into their own system. So I know the amount of the deposits that Chase made, but Chase doesn't.

Chase bank charges $8 for a money order. Western union charges $1.

i've only even gotten a money order for the postal service
makes any shenanigans with money order fraud a federal offense too

Yeah. Really that ordeal with just resetting a password was too much for me. I just called my dad, and I'm gonna get USAA. I also get paid on Thursday instead of friday if I do. So it's kinda full of win.

Write all your login/passwords down into an excel sheet, then password protect it with a password you KNOW you will not forget. Voila!

Resetting a password is a bitch these days. In the process of switch my cell from Verizon to Virgin I had to change the password on the Verizon account as I didn't know it and my parents forgot. All 3 of us are on the account to make changes because I'd broken so many phones in the past and they got tired of going with me to the store.

So anyway, I have to give them the last 4 of the social on the account. I explain that there are 3 of us on the account and proceed to give them all 3. They tell me that not a single one is correct. Really? We don't know our own socials? That issue went on for 2 days with me calling and yelling whenever I had a spare half hour. The whole time they are asking me why I am leaving, what can be done to prevent me from leaving, etc. I was nice at first but they just kept asking questions. Finally I just lost it, cursed at the people, said their service sucked, my phone never worked, told them to fuck off and let me get to the next step. I forget how I actually finally got past it all.

So then I get to the person to change the password. They tell me that only the primary account holder can change it. What? Why the fuck are the other 2 of us even on the account then? Had to have my dad call, fight with them over things, then they finally let them change it. I felt like a Jew trying to get out of Egypt. They just wouldn't let me leave.

In short, fuck most customer service. Verizon's was rude, dumb, and talked me in circles. Virgin's might have been based out of India, but they were nice, patient, and really did all they could to get me to where I needed to be.

Except if anyone ever gets a hold of that sheet, excel passwords can be broken in seconds.

My Chase card used to be a Master Card, but NOOOOOO my wife said visa at the bank and now they're issuing me Visas too.

That's why you keep it external, encrypted, and locked inside a biometric safe along with your handgun :)

Anyways, I've been with BoA for a while now and have never had a problem with them. Never had any experience with Chase but this stuff is good to know.
