Hey everyone, Im NEW to the import world and I have just been sitting back and reading as many forums as I can to learn and pick my questions carefully. I currently have 2 mustangs, one being my baby, an 03 cobra 570whp. I have always been a V8 guy until I rode in my friends SRT4 and I was hooked on 4cyl. Lighter, funner, and better on gas! I recently bought a 95EX coupe that has the typical b18b1 swap with basic bolt-ons. Now the ECU is still the P28 that came originally in the car, so it has the CEL light since its trying to read VTEC. I bought the OBD2 P75 for the B18B1, Now I know it wont just plug in and I assume I just need the conversion harness, but am I needing to rewire anything? The car runs great. I personally hate CEL's and want the car to operate proper. Again I am a V8 guy learning about 4cyls, So I hope I made my question understandable...
 
you dont need an obd2 p75 unless the motor is obd2 and i doubt that it is. stick with an obd1 ecu if the motor is obd1 and it will just plug right in and off you go
 
THe stock ECU in the 95 EX is P28 OBD1 which is VTEC, So to run the P75 OBD2 I purchased for the 98 B18B1 I need a jumper harness and any wiring need to be redone?
 
correct the 98 ls is an obd2a motor, what im wondering tho is did they convert the motor back to obd1 to run the p28 or did they chip the p28 to run the obd2a motor.
 
I dont know, the guy I bought the car from had no clue about it. He just knew that the CEL codes were for the ECU trying to read VTEC. So I figured I would get the OBD2 ECU and solve that problem. I just needed to know if I needed a conversion Harness and any extra wiring.
 
If either one of these were the case, would it get rid of the Vtec Codes or are they always going to be there and pop the CEL?
 
well before you waste any more money look at the car and see if it has a conversion harness on it, then i would try and borrow an obd1 ls ecu and see if that works first. but if it dose come down to useing the ecu you bought all you need is the jumper harness no extra wires
 
Also as far as exhaust goes, it has afetermarket with DCSport header but the cat back sounds terrible. So Im going to purchase a new one. Do I buy an exhaust specifically for the engine and have it custom mounted or buy one that fits the 95 Civic
 
buy the catback for the car, and if theres not a harness on it already im thinkin they prolly converted it back to obd1 so try and borrow an ecu to make sure before you waste your money
 
Sounds good. So find a P74, P75 OBD1 and plug it in and see what happens? All of these differ engine combos are hard geting used to, Ford modular is soo much easier!! But im enjoying the challenge so far. Now I read that B18b1's have the worst rod/stroke ratio. what is ur preference on internals? Im gonna keep it N/A. I would like a 11:1 CR and read that installing JDM B16A P30 pistons would help me accomplish this.

Also, a second option for the exhaust conundrum, if you already have an aftermarket cat-back exhaust, would be to cut off the fart-can style muffler and weld on something like a dynomax super turbo muffler with the same inlet diameter. Or have a muffler shop do it. A lot of times, the mufflers on cheap cat-backs do more to echo and reverberate sound than a muffle it. I have an offset in/center out cherry bomb turbo muffler on my car, and it probably doesn't flow as well as the offset/offset dynomax, but it is really quiet.

Have you tried checking the codes to make sure what they are showing? If the guy had no clue about his car then I would not act on anything he said without checking first. To get the codes use a paper clip to jump the test harness which is located above the ecu by the glove box (two wire plug). Turn the key to on and watch the light. Long blinks indicate first number, short blinks for second number.
