i saw a guy doing work on a project like this using wii remotes, or the tracking sensors from them strapped to his head
really cool demonstration he had set up.
i assume this is the same idea
 
Looks like it uses facial recognition or something. He has a cam on his head to film the perspective.

No they arent - there free with a $20 movie ticket :p. Plus you dont have to also buy the tv.
 
from what i can tell, it just sees the angle you are looking from, and skews the image on the screen respectively. kinda like that sidewalk art that looks all 3d when you see it from the right angle, but from another angle its all distorted. if i had to guess, thats what an observer outside the veiw of the camera would see.
 
There was a video a while ago where it was simply a monitor with a camera(maybe it was something like Kinect?).
