Picked up a 99' xr200r off of craigslist today. Paid $600. Seems like a deal to me - nothing is bent, broken, or smoking. Plastics are scuffed up a little.

I bought it to ride around the yard, maybe do a little trail riding, and mainly to learn how to ride 2 wheeled beasts. The goal is to get a street bike in a year. I think this will be the best practice I can get.

I've got the title to it. I'm debating putting lights on it and commuting to work (5 miles)

So, what all is involved in converting a dirt bike to street legal status?

How do you register and insure it?

Every state is different.

I think in MD it has to be X many CC or larger, have lights/turn signals and x many gears.

For insurance you call up a insurance company, for reg you get that from the DMV.

$600 is a pretty good deal. They are fun little bikes to play around on, it should already have a lighting coil on it so making it streetable should be no problem.

i wouldn't even try to make it streetable. by the time you get lights, mirrors, registration, insurance, etc, you will be more than $600 into it.

I decided against street riding it. It seems to be pretty quick though - gps verified 64mph:D

Before I continue to beat on it I'm going to run through all of the maintenance procedures in the FSM it came with. My goal is to clean it up, ride it for a year, and hopefully sell it for a small profit.

I can't stop riding it:ph34r: Mowed a 1/4-1/2 mile long trail in the tall grass in my back yard. Best lap time is 1:05:D

I soooooooo have the fever for a street bike. I'm going to have to try hard and wait till the fall to get one.

1. It's gotta be a Honda. Why? Because I get parte CHEEP and delivered to my desk at work.

I'm looking at a 90's Nighthawk 750.

nice steal you got there.

nighthawks are good bikes

Another reason we gotta get this midwest meet set up. Quickest E.T. challenge!!! Maybe Byron could bring his pit bike to mess with. Wish I still had my 81' Honda ATC70 three wheeler. That thing was awesome!

Oh and if I got the Si stripped by then Id have a ton of parts to sell. Maybe we could have a help strip Rick's car down to nothing meet. I'll bring my M4. We can shoot up the shell. Haha

that awesome you're starting on 200cc. Most idiots start on a 600 or 650 sport bike and end up road rash. lol

Down for sure, I go to Wellsville all the time with the Jeep and dirtbike, would be cool to do a weekend there, I have a site with a camper and all the necessities.

Hmm. Sounds tempting. I wonder how many people would show? Trying to think which regulars are within a few hours of Cbus.

So about a half hour ago I was cruising a back road to a trail that I ride. I'm doing around 50 and a fucking deer ran our right in front of me. Smoked it. I went down hard. I was wearing jeans, thick jacket, steel toed boots, mountain biking gloves, and a helmet. Everything worked except the jeans and jacket. Go figure. On my way now to CVS for bandages:(

Damn dude. Sounds like you got off easy though. Those things are death machines. Doe or buck? I was always worried about one walking out late at night/early morning while i was riding the gixxer to/from work.
