here are the Tramontinas
made in Brazil

the 14 inch bolo i bought last year is simply amazing... i used around the house here to trim back some branches and such the first night i got it... it did well but needed an edge put on it in a bad way... so i spent a little time on it with a file and a stone and it took an edge that you could shave with if you were so inclined
a week or so later i took it camping and it did absolutely everything i asked it to do
and out performed the camp axe that my friend brought with him by a large margin at everything other than for splitting a few very hard pieces of wood... the thin blade of the machete would tend to bind in the very hard pieces, it simply does not have enough wedge to it... but it did everything else, chopped down trees, cut up branches into manageable sized logs, split wood, cleared brush, sharpened sticks, etc... just about everything i needed a blade for, other than eating, i used the machete for and it worked amazing

after that i used it at my moms place to clear away a ton of weeds, overgrowth and such... i was amazed how well it worked... especially since it is completely wrong for that type of job

can not say enough about that machete... very inexpensive, very well made, simply an amazing performer...

so i figured id try some of their other designs

as i was saying above, after clearing the weeds and overgrowth up at moms place i started looking at some of the different designs that would be better suited to that type of work... i was stuck between these 2 Bill Hook style ones from Imacasa
but for the price ($13-16) i said fuck it and grabbed both of them :)
the overgrowth wont stand a chance this year :D

here are the Imacasas
made in El Salvador

yeah these should do just fine :D

i highly recommend either of these companies
they make real deal no bullshit no frills machetes meant for real use
they are made for and by people for whom the machete is a daily tool
they are not made to look cool, they are made to function (though there is a certain beauty to the form of function  )
they use no bullshit materials like high carbon steel and hard wood... no fancy finishes or materials here
no built in saw backs, or bottle openers, or screwdrivers or, microwave ovens... just a big sharp blade
and they are priced to be used and abused ($6-16 each)
if you want a tool that will get the job done and be there for you no matter how poorly you treat it... look no further
this has got to be the best made, hardest working "disposable" tool ive ever seen

one more group shot :)

cant wait to get these sharpened up and broken in :)

That is a helluva deal. It is really easy to get caught up in the high speed low drag mentality when it comes to buy working tools. I may have to pick up one of those 14" bolos before I start trekking in the woods this summer.

absolutely... it will make an excellent pack knife

also... while were talking about woods knives
check out the Frost Mora knives
Frosts of Sweden - Knifecenter.com

again very high quality blades, and cheap enough that if you break or loose it you wont care
they make them in either high carbon steel or stainless
they come stupidly sharp right out of the box... but you can put an absolutely retarded edge on them if you want
i grabbed this one... and again couldnt be happier with it
Mora Frost of Sweden Clipper Knife 3 7/8" Carbon Steel Blade, Military Green - Knifecenter.com
very nice handle, rubberized for grip when its wet or otherwise slippery
high carbon steel takes and holds an edge extremely well

E, are you the skinner from Dexter? That's quite the tool kit.

They need wrist straps like wii controllers. Lol

B doesn't care... he has his own supplies and the more the merrier.

The one rule i had was no drugs. I made him close his meth lab.

E, are you the skinner from Dexter?
never saw the show so im completely missing the reference... but i dont think so

That's quite the tool kit.
:) thanks... hoping they will work well

They need wrist straps like wii controllers. Lol
thats a great idea... then when you lose your grip on one of them mid swing, instead of safely going off and sticking into the ground or a log... it whips back around up and under and chops your fucking balls off
no... there will be no lanyards on any of my machetes

E is this stuff for hiking/camping?

Does B know ur collection of knives is this vast?

hiking, camping, general yard work, whatever really
the 2 bill hook ones are intended for specific uses clearing weeds and overgrowth
the bolo is just an all around performer
the little 12 inch bush one i figure will be useful as a large knife for all sorts of stuff as well... camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, whatever really... ill probly put a nicer edge on that one than the others which will get a more durable utility edge
and the cane machete i figure might be useful for clearing brush, weeds and overgrowth

wouldnt really consider it a "collection"... its just an assortment of tools for different uses
i dont generally buy anything unless it has some use for me
and while these will be well cared for, they will be used and abused and eventually replaced as intended :)

as for other blades... i have a few folders that i carry around, a few fixed blades for other shit, some multi tool type deals, and now a variety of machetes :)

its still a horrible idea to have a loose free swinging blade attached to you in any way
because its gunna arc back around... and youre not going to like the outcome

if you are dealing with a small knife maybe its not as big of a deal
but when you are forcefully swinging a heavy blade that is over a foot in length its simply asking for trouble and stitches at best

you wanna know what keeps my hand from slipping UP on the blade.... a good handle, a proper grip, and half an ounce of knowing how the fuck to work with and handle a fucking knife

the only reasons i can think of that you would ever lose your grip and end up sliding your hand forward on to the blade involve gross negligence, obscene stupidity, and complete misuse of whatever type of knife you are working with... it simply does not just happen

if its a small knife that you are using for some close work, like carving or whittling, at some wood, or dressing an animal, or even prepping some food... then i guess i can understand (i still wouldnt do it)

or if its a fighting blade and you dont want it to get knocked out of your grip or away from you... then i can understand

but when its a big honking ass blade that you are swinging forcefully... nope fuck that...

if youre worried about losing it in the underbrush, then put a flag on the end of it, or paint it some bright ass color

if you are on a boat and worried about losing it in the water than be more careful and carry a back up

or use a LOONGG lanyard... one that is 5-6 feet long... so the blade can fly off away from you and land on its own instead of penduluming back around at you

What you describe is a 'lose' fit. The tight double loop lanyards keep your hand on the handle and even if you let go, it basically stays right there in place. There would be no pendulum effect and unless you're cross-cutting back to your torso, which isn't proper use in the first place, it shouldn't be an issue of it swinging anywhere.

Now you should let a ham shank, one with the bone in, sit out in the sun for a week to putrify. That should make a good zombie arm analog. That way you can test your new toys and see which one will work best against the zombie hoard.

thats easy... which ever one i happen to have in my hand at the moment is the best one for hacking down zombies

lol

the way he has the one looped up on the machete in the first 2 pics it will come swinging back around if he loses his grip on it

the lanyard on the SAK is pointless... if you are putting enough force on the blade of that knife to make that lanyard even remotely useful you are likely going to break the damn knife anyway

the one on the bottom hole of the Indio is pointless and if anything actually impedes your grip options.... oh but you can loop it around different fingers not just your thumb.... yeah i saw that... dumb... the blade design itself on that knife will keep you from sliding your hand forward onto the blade... and yes i see how he can use it to really ratchet down his grip on the knife so it doesnt come lose in his hand... theres another way to do that too... its called dont hold your knife like a fairy

the one on the top hole on the Indio is again pointless... unless you are looking to be able to free your hand up for something else while your knife dangles around your hand area... sounds like a great idea

completely stupid and pointless

this is the bushcraft version of mall ninjary... EVERYTHING needs a lanyard!!!!1!!

It's easy to say it on paper/online, but a sweaty hand and a tired arm can easily lead to an accident in the field.

Well I'm pretty sure this can only be settled by a taped machete fight between the both of you. B gets the lanyard and E uses kung fu grip.

We've been through this. it's an un fair fight because if he kills me, he basically just made himself homeless.. lol

thats a shit load of machetes
i might have to think about making a purchase
i've got some yard work that will need tending to soon enough
