90 crx si - zc SOHC... no matter what I do I cannot get the ignition timing set properly. It came with the timing belt set like a DX, I changed it to the SI (line with mark rather than two lines even with head)

The ignition timing is either one way too far or the other way too far...

has new fuel pump n filter, have swapped dizzy & ecu. it has new o2 sensor, plugs, wires, cap n button. Redone all grounds, ground to ecu frame from batt neg as well.

What could cause the ignition timing to not be able to set? Strange thing is I replaced the o2 sensor and it never ran better... for like 10 minutes???
Could it be that the wrong timing belt was used? I have had it for a month and drive it for 3 weeks with a slight miss. Any ideas?

Most all D series T belts "should" be the same.

Are you not able to time it correctly with a gun?

A slight miss can be signs of a weak/uneven cylinder.
Check compression on all 4 and report back.

Yes, sorry... put a timing light on it and I can get close but run out of adjustment on the sizzy 1st. .... maybe I just need to backup the timing belt one tooth?

doubtful your a whole tooth off.

Your engine would not respond like you wanted it if that were the case.....
A slight miss would be the least of your worries. Run a compression test.
Free rental on the tool from vato zone. :D

can't adjust dizzy any further... did someone install the wrong timing belt? I have had this car for about 4 weeks, drove it for the 1st 3 weeks with a miss.

Hey all, another related question.
I have a 1987 CRX 125hp, ZC engine I suppose.

I read on the excellent forum that my timing belt should have 124 notches.
But out online spare parts retailers here in sweden will sell me a belt with 129 notches.
Kamrem - 48-5170XS
Gates 5170XS

the reseller here in sweden could be wrong of course but it made me wonder.

checked the compression before I bought it, its good.
The timing belt was installed like a dx - two marks even w head, changed that to the si alignment (the 7o'clock mark) That's two teeth diff if what I read is correct. Maybe I jest need to split the diff? It runs the same way, and timing is not able to be set at either setting. Its either too far one way or too far the other.

Anybody ever run into this?

camshaft timing gear marks need to be like the Si with mark at about 7 o'clock lined up with the pointer on the inside timing belt cover - what kind of timing light are you using? if you are using a simple flashing light, you need to line up the middle line of the three ignition timing marks on the pulley with the pointer on the timing belt cover - if you are using a digital timing light where you preset the advance in the light to the desired timing, say 18 degrees in this case, you need to be lining the TDC mark, which is the single mark off to the right of the three marks on the pulley, with the pointer on the cover

see your other post

I have a standard timing light, flashing only. I know the different timing marks. I have the cam set to the pointer on the inside of the cover while the crank is at TDC ... the lone white mark not any of the 3 marks.

ok...
took new dizzy & ecu off, put on old... same problem.
put new dizzy and ecu back on... timing issue gone.
able to correctly set the timing.

BUT......... after warmup I can take off and hit 5 or 6k rpm no problem ... lots of power
slow down and do it again it falls around 4k ... doesn't want to run, no power.
I can stop and start over and it will kinda get better ... but has no power.
I can shut it down and wait a couple mins and repeat.
wiring? fuel filter? (new pump and filter)

are you bypassing (shorting out) the ecu when you try and set the timing? its how BASE timing is set, and adjusted...

I am using a jumper on the service conection for setting the timing.
