I have a 98 civic ex coupe with a 1.6 liter stock engine anyway I bought the car at aauction and found out it needs a new rod bearing so i have being looking around and figured i want to try and replace engine with something else should I buy a vtec d16 or a b18c1 or b18c5 or a b18a or a b18b i would like to have stock tranny still to keep the price low and was wondering if i could run the stock tranny with a b18 motor. My goal is to get this for under 2-3 grand and have about 250-300 hp car thats a daliy driver but also fun to drive and reliable any help i can get his much appreciated thx.
P.S. I will be doing minor mods to motor to get the 250-300 hp range

b-series and d-series will not mate up, so you can't use a tranny like that.

your best bet is probably to pick up a d15/d16 block and put your current motor stuff on to it. Get it running/etc and then look into modding it for power.

300 hp, low budget, and reliable rarely works.

Where are you located? I'll sell you my Si's B16A/tranny/ecu/axles/hytech header/everything else for 2k. Find a used JRSC, get it tuned, and you'll be close-ish for around your price point.

I live in north dakota and i saw that u can use a d series tranny with a b series engine on this site

This information is not correct anymore (originally posted in 2003):
D series and B series parts are mostly NOT interchangeable. You can NOT mount a B series transmission on a D series engine, and you can NOT mount a D series transmission on a B series engine. They won't bolt up.
Just for reference, all USDM 4G (88-91) and USDM 5G (92-95) Civics came with D series drivetrains, while all USDM 6G (96-00) Civics except the Si came with D series drivetrains as well. The 99-00 USDM Si has a B16A2 in it bolted up to a B series transmission, so most any B series engine will drop in and bolt up.

With the advent of new adapter kits on the market, it is now possible to mount a D series transmission onto a B series engine as well as an H/F series engine, and also a B series transmission onto an H/F engine. Search online and on this site for "B2D", "H2D", and "H2B" as the common terms for transmission adapter kits.

In general, you can adapt just about any transmission onto an engine that rotates in the same direction give the right measurements and clutch or torque converter setup. Someone may tell you that a combo is impossible, but it really just means that the setup isn't easy or hasn't been done as a kit you can buy yet. Just look to the numerous Chevy small block and Volkswagen setups out in the modding community.

Older Honda engines- D, B, H and F blocks (front wheel drive) all rotate in reverse- at least in the wrong direction to bolt up to what is considered the standard direction in most automotive engines on the market. Looking from the flywheel side (exterior view) of the engine, these Honda blocks rotate clockwise. Most engines rotate counterclockwise when viewed from the flywheel side. found this

I would not mess with bolting a B series motor to a D tranny. Even if there are adapter plates to do so it would be a waste. Either get a complete B swap (can be done for under 2k) or just replace the D block.

ok i will prob just get the whole b swap where could i get a good engine and tranny and also what engine the b18a or b or c

:werd:

The cost of the mounting plate will probably exceed the cost of just putting a B-series transmission in, especially if you buy a swap package. Those custom mounting plates are really designed for people who are building cars with big budgets and have very specific motor/transmission combinations in mind.

One other thing though, you're not even going to get close to 250-300 hp on any of these engines with "minor mods". I assume by minor, you mean stuff like intake and exhaust? Take a B18C1 for example. You're looking at 170 horses bone stock...an intake and a muffler aren't going to add 100+ horsepower, sorry.

To make those kinds of numbers, you need a serious engine build or boost of some kind (turbo, supercharger, etc.). If you want a fairly significant power increase without boosting and without building an engine, then look towards an H22 or K-series swap instead (that's going to cost you more than 2-3 grand though)...

Ok ya thats nice but Im not sure wantt to do so ill let everyone tell me what i should do
Heres what i want my 98 civic to be
MY GOALS
WANT 250-300hp
UNDER 3grand
RELIABLE

ugh k i was looking at a f20=180-200hp and that with tranny is 1850 so cud i do that and also i would add more than intake and exhaust

it will take forced induction to reach your power goals with any of the easily swappable motors. to do it anything even close to the right way, it will be over your budget. sorry to smash your dreams. but seriously, if you swap a b18c into your car it will be fun. with the right bolt ons, cams, and tuning you can see 200+whp and a it will be quick.

This is impossible. Either change your power goal, your budget or take away the reliability. Let us know where you're willing to sacrafice.

ok power goal is changed budget is he only thing left so under 3 grand sorry for being a pain

So what's your new power goal then? And keep in mind, not all of this has to be done at once. If you can afford to spend around 3 grand right now, then get the engine you want and get it in your car. Just adding a B-series will be a nice upgrade over the stock D16. Enjoy the new engine, and then start saving again for a turbo or a motor build...

k ya cud i reach 200hp for under 3grand and also since im only 15 i have a job so i have a small income but my dad is helping pay for this
