i was wondering if anyone knew much about classic car values. my dad and i are looking at buying a car as a project to work on....."bonding project". a friend of ours is selling a care that were looking at but i have no idea what its worth. this is what he sent me about the car

1971 Plymouth Duster Twister Package in Tawny Gold with white side striping.
Original body and paint
Car originally had a 318 (I would need to re-check what transmission it had)

Added:
Twin Hood Scoops (a Twister Option) with the strobe hood stripes
Rear Go-Wing (a Twister Option)
Front Bucket Seats
1969 Complete 340 Engine
1969 4-Speed Transmission
Hurst Shifter with center Console (was not a Duster option, but it was in the A-Body Barracuda)
340 Clutch Pedal (Heavy Duty and is different than other engines)
Rim Blow Steering Wheel
Rallye Dash and gauge cluster (2 year option) including the 4-speed reverse indicator lamp
Rallye Wheels (back two widened)
8-3/4" rear housing with 3:23 Sure Grip
340 torsion bars
Dual exhaust
340/shark tooth grill
Stainless steel molding package on top of doors and below quarter windows (I have not seen this on any other Duster)
Front and Rear anti-sway bars
AM/FM radio (am doesn’t work)
Dual side mirrors
Turn signal lamps on fenders
Mopar electronic ignition (also an option)
Power Steering

This is a start

There is some issue with the fuel gauge that I haven't figured out yet, and of course the minor rust/dent/dings etc

What's he asking? Any pics? How are the floorboards, quarters, running boards, and rear window tray? If you can get under it and see if the frame is squared up. Also, what rear end is in it?

my only advise for an older car would be to make sure under the wiper cowl does not leak.
other than that i can offer no help.
pics would be good.

another suggestion
last i heard you need firefox for this site
crazedlist.org
you want to search for duster, in for sale, cars by all, and then select northwest
you will get quite a few results, anywhere from $500, to an all numbers matching 1973 with 340 for 18k
the 18k car = http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/cto/2398941803.html

i tried searching for duster twister and it got no results.

look how fucking simple that engine bay is... fucking dream of newer cars coming out looking like that.

what exactly is the project if it is pretty much in good condition?

and where are the pics?

Run a magnet on the body to check for fillers. If you arenn't sure about something have a mechanic or body shop look at it.

^ At that, how perfect are you going with this bitch? I know if it was me and my pop I wouldn't give a fuck if the panels were perfectly straight or no dents/dings/bondo.

Its going to be a CLEAN driver. Then eventually pull the motor and build it and restore it to as perfect and stock as possible and enjoy it

Back in the day, there was an article in Hot Rod magazine where they did a Project with a 340 Duster. Using all Over the Counter MOPAR parts (available at that time circa 1972) they built a 10 second car.

Get the SOB and have fun.

It depends, 40 years old, some shitty body work could have been done. It could cost him a lot in the end to fix or he could have trouble selling it down the road.
Maybe I am overly cautious because my old vw beetle had bondo on the frame, allowing the front driverside wheel to be pushed back 8 inches when I crashed it.

the one thing I can tell you to check on older mopars is the front torsion bar mounts. notorius for rotting out and if that happens the car is basically worthless

That sounds way boring. I just never understood the obsession that people have with making a car all sterile like when it came out of the dealership with all the silly crayon marks on the firewall and all the "numbers matching". Bah. Take a risk and cut something.

I can't imagine that one rotted mount would render an entire car worthless. If it's the frame end it can be repaired.

AWESOME - we had a duster back when I was growing up and I would love to get my hands on one again....ours was white with a brown and gold stripe down the side.

I'm not talkin #'s matching stock just a clean stock look. If it was an original hemi cuda, or a max wedge plymouth or somthing it would be differant
