I want to advance the timing on my 89 honda civic hb 1.5 liter.

My friend said just move the belt and move the tooth over but what way do I do it and how much.

Start by telling your friend they are a moron and should not be allowed to work on anything with an engine.

That is an improper way to advance your timing unless the cam timing is off in which case the car would not run right.

Why do you want to advance your timing?

And then answer this question.

Ok well his car had the timing advanced and then he was able to beat me in a head to head race. Before we where matched . Could he be talking about the dis because I hear people talk about doing that to run better.

timing is adjusted at the distributor for what you are talking about doing. but you can cause damage if you go to far advanced. dont take offense but i sorta get the feeling maybe you should do a little more research before you do anything adjusting of things. just adjusting the timing will not just suddenly win you a race. there are a lot of variables to account for.

Don't touch it! Sounds like you don't know what your doing or dont have a clue why you change timing.
