More and more companies are ditching the big engines for smaller booster ones, much like what happened with chrysler and dsm in the 80s. Even ford jumped this way with the svo mustang for a bit.

The S4 has ditched the v8 and has become v6 SC
bmw has ditched larger displacements for turbos on most of its line up for the future
rumors of the NSX replacement were originally v10 before being scrapped from the economy, and then re-rumored of a turbo 6 of some sort (not sure if thats remotely accurate)
and now, GM has rumored of the next (C7) vette going to a 3.0TT v8
 
Gotta get those mpg's yo. I'll be curious to see how these new motors hold up over the long run. That is part of the reason Honda hasn't gotten into it yet.
 
and supposedly the cr-z is getting a 1.6l turbocharged powerplant
 
i dont think anything is better than fast and good mpg's... whats the point of have a fun car if you cant afford to drive it?
 
I saw that a couple days ago; WTF is wrong with them! They were at the head of the pack building gas guzzlers and now they want to make people pay more for gas? I'd love to see their plan backfire; their SUVsales drop like hell and instead of people buying their products, they go to Ford and imports.
 
Pfffft my 94 supercharged Corvette got 25mpg, had everything to do with the gear ratio and not the engine...2.59's FTMFW
 
I got 57mpg hwy sitting at around 4000rpm /70mph ;) Really has to do with combination of load and RPM.

Some guy on D-series.org actually got better than that in a ~200hp turbocharged d16(I think he got it up to like 70mpg); an engine from the early 90s!

It's still kinda on the DL, but the 4.2 V8 at Audi and the 5.2 V10 are going the way of the dodo bird. A new multi-output 4.0L V8 TT will take their place in the whole lineup. I've gotten sketchy details from training staff, but its going to range in output from 385hp to 520hp.

It is a new trend, now that people care more about MPG's than cylinder count. The new Sonata has a turbo 4 instead of a V6 option. Ford has the Ecoboosts. Even Mercedes is dropping its big 6.2L NA V8's for turbo V8's.
 
Probably has to do with suppliers too; it seems turbos are more popular nowadays and that has given companies room to expand; thus increasing product output and lower costs. Also, less raw material needed for a smaller engine.
 
Honestly, i put a lot of it towards better computer electronics available to make them run smoothly.
 
Are you saying Starions didn't run smoothly?
 
The turbo f150 pulls everything else out of the water in videos I have seen.
 
here's a novel fucking idea:

instead of increasing the price of gas to the consumer, start producing a more efficient LINEUP. not just a couple cars, the ENTIRE LINEUP.

the problem here is not with the consumer's demand. the demand for a higher mpg vehicle is there. the vehicles just aren't there to buy.
