My sisters corolla has been over heating and we have replaced everything except the head gasket, so Thats the next step. Its a 98 with almost 300,000 miles but its a good little car.

Anyways, Just looking for any info that will help me with it. Specifically Im trying to figure out the torque specs for the head. Any helpful info is appreciated.

I also realized how much I LOVE hondaswap and how informative it is! there needs to be a toyotaswap.com haha

So I found a helms manual online for changing the head gasket but it doesn't have any tips for removing the exhaust manifold

:( stupid Toyotas

how old is your sister?

:werd: lmao

not going to lie, only looked in this thread because from the main page, looking at the other vehicles section, this thread showed as the most recent post, and all i could see was "tearing into my sister"
i was like, damn, im going to need to move this to the nws.

but, to your original problem, im going to go out on a limb here and say that you need to remove it by taking out the bolts first. then it should come loose after a bit of prying.

but, what you could probably be referring to is the lack of space to do that, which would mean that you will need to remove the radiator, and possibly the radiator support. i know putting a header in my ef was a bitch if you didnt do that.

the exhaust manifold for this car is on the rear side of the motor, the intake is in the front.

Its not hard, the bolts are just rediculously placed. with a sensor right in the way

you posted this as i was typing my last response.
post a pic so we know what you are talking about.

remove the sensor, and would a swivel socket/adapter not do the trick?

k. didnt know. not familiar with the toyotas.

pic.

Ill take a picture this afternoon when I get back at it. I gave up yesterday when I busted my hand on a really stiff bolt. MY dad had to come out and get the pipe wrench on it haha.

Image attached. On the right under the sensor is where the bolt is. and everything else is in the way as well.

Ive already disconnected all the nuts holding the manifold to the head, so once I get to the point where I am pulling the head off the block Im just gonna try to slide it out from it.

so, you cant get at it from another angle?

like going in from the side through the wheel well area?
or just under the car in general.

Going to get her to do your nails while you talk about boys with her?

OMG is Brad Pitt and Jen getting back together? like I so saw it in the Star mag, maybe its true? omg omg omg!

I guess I could take off that bottom bar thing. Other wise the only plausible way I could see is with an open end wrench and little tinny turns, But The are on their really tight and IDK if I could get enough torque on it the way my arm would be positioned.

Depending upon support brackets and such, you may be able to remove the head with the exhaust manifold attached - then work it from there. Just pull the bolts from when it connects to the downpipe.

thats kinda what I was trying to do but the down pipe conectors are in the dumbest spot.

Im probably gonna do what invisibledemon said and just try to get it with a swivel head and really long extention. That MIGHT do it. Ill let yall know once my hangover wears off and I can get back to work.

make sure you get a quality swivel and extension.
then use a breaker bar because you are going to have to twist hard, you'll lose some torque thanks to the long extension.

use cheap parts, and the swivel is just going to break. get a craftsmen if you have a sears nearby, that way, if it breaks, you can get a new one right away.
