I live here and float the rivers very frequently. Even though its kinda shitty it will save a lot of lives. I hear of several people that die on the rivers around here every summer and this will save a lot of lives.

life jackets are REQUIRED in 4 feet of water.

fuck, just stand up!

we have people come from LA to go to the river here.. there have been so many deaths because people arent prepared for what the Killer Kern has in-store for them .. even in 4ft of water the current is deadly and will pull you right under

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kern_River

The Kern is also well known for its danger, and is sometimes known as the "Killer Kern". A sign at the mouth of Kern Canyon warns visitors, "Danger. Stay Out. Stay Alive" and tallies the deaths since 1968; as of July 12, 2010 the count was up to 251

Laws like this just prolong the existence of idiots.

You don't have to be an idiot to get knocked off a tube or raft and trap under a log or stump ect...

point is, a fly fisherman, who has been fishing a spot for 40 years without incident, will now have to wear a life vest, or be fined for fishing in calm waters.

Will the cops come down and measure the deep part? within X feet of where you are?

it's a stupid unenforcable law that is a waste of time for everyone.

We have a law where you have to be a minimum of 16yrs old to ride in the bed of a truck or have a supervising adult.....but everyone inside the cab must have on a seat belt. :)

True. But the odds are they would never be there to deal with that guy, its being made for the summer floaters and that will most likely be the only time its enforced. There has been a lot of local debate over this law and I deffinatly see both sides of it. It is a pita but it could make a differance.

there was an amendment for adults fishing
An amendment exempting adults who are fishing was passed.

i always have my life jacket when out on the boat or riding on the tube behind the boat
i'd rather be safe than dead, but i think it should still be a personal choice

It might not be a bad idea for people who have been drinking to wear them. A lot of the falling off boats and drowning incidents around here are alcohol related.
When I had my boat or being on friends boats we only wore them once while boating. A lunar tide and a severe storm came while we were heading back. I made my buddies put them on because we were getting thrown around and the boat was taking on a lot of water.

I am not in favor of restraining the "Invisible Hand" of Darwin via frivolous laws that make no sense.

Take NYC for example.

They recently put bike lanes on a few of the major avenues.

Now these lanes only go one direction (the same as the traffic) but bikers ride on them both ways all the time.

Also, the lanes are right next to the sidewalk and are dangerous for pedestrians, as the bikers do not obey traffic lights.

Pretty soon there will be someone there to ticket bikers for going the wrong direction and not obeying traffic lights. The good thing about riding a bike in NYC is that nothing applies to you, but now with bike lanes, we are mere steps away from more regulations and laws for our "safety".

Basically, passing one law always makes room for more laws. First there are bike lanes, then there will be bike lane enforcement because of accidents occurring on said bike lanes... pretty soon there will be a yellow line down the center of the sidewalk and ill have to stick to the right....
