Its a phased roll out. Eventually if you use any Google product you will have access to Google +. I could see this really taking off as long as they don't pull a Buzz or Wave. The shear ubiquity of it would more or less force everyone into using it. Want to share a funny video with friends? Hit the +1 button and select the group you want to share it with. That sort of thing.
Well I like the siloing that takes place when you add folks to a circle. Also I really like being able to see everything everyone posts in a circle. Facebook decides what shows up in your feed with no ability to change it. It most defiantly is a field trial though. If you create a photo album in Plus the only way I found to change it was through Picasa. That is kind of awkward but editing settings and permissions is a lot easier than Facebook which is a huge plus. I'm writing down my pros and cons so after a week or so Ill have more input.

its too much work transitioning to a new social site. all the stupid requests from people. all the new stupid features that are exactly the same as the last sn site, just have to learn the different way they work.

google needs to stick to being a god damned search engine, and not trying to do every fucking thing else.

it just really irks me that businesses will no longer remain in the confines of their specialty because they see that somebody else is doing great in another.

Plus is all about search. Google is great at the algorithm game but how much news and lulz do you get from doing a Google search? For most not much, you get it off forums and social networks. Plus will be scaled out to every one of Google's products to help bolster search. I prefer Plus thus far over Facebook simply because the privacy controls are stupid simple. You don't have to spend twenty minutes hunting around for stuff.
As for transiting there isn't much to it for me. But then again all of my contacts from facebook have been stored in Google Contacts for the last two years so adding people was a none issue.
Then again, if I don't have more than six people actually using it in the next six months to a year then none of these things matter in the slightest.
