Hackintosh, Linux, or back to Windows?

So my computer is pissing me off, it hangs on shut down, the sleep function dicked up one of my external HDD's, sometimes shit just stops working like the sound when I am watching Youtube, then it's gone till I restart, and it hangs on restart, gotta hard reset, fuck.

So I was thinking, I am not gaming much right now, not till BF3 comes out, so I don't really need Windows for anything, maybe Outlook to check my work email, but hey surprise surprise it runs on all three w0ot. So I am considering a Hackintosh. I have been running OSX in VMWare for a while and it appears to work fine, there's more to the set-up when actually installing it, but there's some good tutorials on the internet, with links to everything you need, and if it fails, hell, can always reformat right? I was also thinking about Ubuntu 11.04, I have it on my laptop, works pretty good.

I do require the ability to stream HD movies from this computer in my office, over my wireless to my laptop in the living room, and I would like to be able to access any computer in the network without a bunch of drama.

So, what are some thoughts? Hack it up? Penguins? Or tried and true?

Ive read into hackintoshs and they seem to extremely picky about combos and such and what works with what. Ive tried Ubuntu and while its free and great, it takes a bit of learning to figure out the ins and outs of it. Im stuck on Windows because for me, its a much easier OS to use than remembering and running commands. Mostly though, there are so much more programs in terms of overclocking like MSI Afterburner, AIDA64 and such that I haven't find an equivalent for in Linux.

If you're a pretty strong gamer or a "power user", I would say Windows because usually everything comes out for it first; software and hardware.

Maybe dual-boot? (I tried it and eventually deleted my ubuntu install because something screwed messed up the MBR and i used the ubuntu install like 4 tines?).

I've been using Linux off and on for a few years, it's way ahead of where it was when I first install Fedora Core 4 in regards to easy of use. I don't overclock because this motherboard has zero settings for it, it I had another I might, but the i7 is pretty much as fast as I need, a real speed boost would be going with an SSD or two. I've been dual booting my laptop, but I'm not a fan of having to go back and forth to do things.

I really only am considering a Hackintosh because of the geek in me to see if I can do it, and to throw up a proverbial middle finger to Apple, and their retarded expensive proprietary hardware. I'll probably try it later tonight, and if it doesn't work then I'll throw Windows 7 on my Raptor and then install Ubuntu from inside 7, and dual boot it. It's just a pain in the ass to open up the rig, and unplug all the other hard drives.

Im kind of in this same position too, and I'll just tell you what i decided.

In my case I'm building a computer fairly similar to yours (6970 graphics card and 2600k chip).

I've been using Linux for the better part of 8 years now and love every minute of it. I'm a hardcore wow raider so I need something beefier than my Core2 Macbook.

Mac is niceish. It crashes just as much as XP did (Something bad happened and you must press and hold the power button. I hate the fact that when I'm on my mac I have to use different hot keys than linux (and since I'm usually using synergy to get to it, it gets really annoying to switch between the windows key and control all the time. No dual clip boards REALLY pisses me off when I'm trying to work.

I love linux but there's some serious graphic hurtles to overcome to play wow and you cant watch netflix on linux. 2 REALLY big down sides for my home use. It does have ffmpeg, but I can get that with cygwin in windows, so no big loss there. Also Ubuntu 11.04 (and ubuntu is my distro of choice) has some install issues with the recent release.

Windows 7. I'd go out on a limb and say it's just as stable as linux, has support for a lot of stuff I do on a daily basis. You can make it use lavc instead of ffdshow if you do a bit of work. Plays netflix out of the box, plays dvds and blurays out of the box, and plays wow. The only negatives I have for it are shitty terminal support (again with no dual clip board) for when I'm on call and that i'd have to buy fraps to record the raids.

For me all of them have their negatives but windows has the fewest negatives for my life style. So that's where I'm going...with a dual boot of course. No linux admin worth his salt would leave his personal computer with just windows on it.

So, I am posting this from my Hackintosh

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 beside my WIndows 7 on the same disc, then went and unhooked all my disc from my machine, and stuck in a 80GB laptop drive I had sitting around, and install OSX 10.6.3 on it. Worked pretty good. I gotta figure a few things out, but it seems ok so far.

Alrighty then, back in Windows 7/Ubuntu disk, the Hackintosh has some real issues that make it completely unusable. Everytime you update, you have to reinstall Kext files, that is if it reboots at all. I keep having it kernel panic or whatever, and it wouldn't restart on reboot. Oh well, fuck it, who cares.

Love my 7 Ultimate. First M$ OS where I've gone out and willingly bought a license for every machine. Just wrapped up a 2500k build with an SSD RAID and 16GB of RAM. Love the speed.
