Recently replaced the timing belt on my D15B7 and also did the head gasket since it was blown. I just want to clarify that when I put the timing belt on that the TDC mark on the crankshaft pulley is supposed to point at the mark on the timing belt cover and the cam marks should be "UP" and the 3 and 9 o'clock marks aligned with the top of the cylinder head. This is how I reinstalled it. I have my distributor turned all the way clockwise and when I checked the ignition timing with my light I am right on the TDC mark. How do I get my ignition timing back to 16 degrees BTDC. Do I need to take the timing belt off and readjust it on the crankshaft pulley? Any help is greatly appreciated as I can barely make it up hills now without putting it in 1st gear and am super slow to get up to speed from a standing start.... Thanks in advance...

Like I stated in your other thread......you need to jump the service plug with a paper clip or something. Download a Helm's manual for your motor....its a great source.

14,16,18, these are your ignition timing, the other mark by itself is dtc for your mechanical timing. Please don't get this confuse. To fix the ignition timing, first you need to make sure your at TDC, then get a timing light to fix your ignition timing. To fix the ignition timing is by moving the distributor. But first make sure your at operating temp or two cycle of the fan and then jump the service connector, Passenger side by your right foot.

Thanks, dj. I get all that but I can't turn my distributor any more in the direction it needs to go. That's why I was wondering if somehow my timing belt is off a tooth or two...

Pull the negative on the battery and put the distributor back in the middle. Put negative back on and start the car......jump the service plug and adjust timing from there. Once you got it where you want....unplug the paper clip (or piece of wire) and restart the car......timing should be in the right spot.

Also.....for mechanical timing.....you can take out spark plug #1 and put a long skinny screw driver (or whatever) in the cylinder until it gently touches the piston. Make sure its at the highest point for TDC (just watch the screwdriver) and then look at your timing belt to see where it sits when the #1 piston is at TDC. Another thing is the key that fits into the crank pulley bolt should be at noon but that can be a pain to get that crank bolt off to check. .

from this statement: "I HAVE MY DIZZY TURN ALL THE CLOCKWISE" meaning you ADVANCE your ignition? IF YOU HAVE IT CORRECTLY INSTALLED THEN JUST TURN IT BACK THE OTHER WAY TO 16DEGRESS.

OK. So I did as CAFROG said to do. When the engine was cold it was right on my 16 degree mark. After it warmed to correct temp it was only at about 5 degrees BTDC after I adjusted the distributor as far as it would turn. I am at a loss now as to what to do. Going to read the Helms manual and see what I can find out. Thanks again for all your guys' help. Just the info on doing my head gasket without removing the rocker arm assembly, from info I got on here, has saved me a ton of money at the shop.

Timing should always be done when the car is warm (running temps....fan came on).....sorry I did not state that.

Thanks but I knew it needed to be warm. I just checked it when I first started it up and it was at 16 deg. After warming up though when I went to adjust it I retarded it all the way back and it was way off with my light :( Helms manual was helpful and will try messing with my timing belt again tomorrow.
