best laptop for $350-400? most likely from Best Buy.. possible online order

unless you're doing hardcore gaming, there's little point to spending more than 300 these days.....

just about everything comes with win 7, 4gb of ram, and a decent proc for web/email/etc etc

yea.. i noticed most are about 350... which would be best to get?? i guess HP is only gonna be dealing w/ business computer and no more personal computers... Gateway, Toshiba, Dell?

acer or toshiba is probably what i would get these days

i'll also add that this is for a friend of mine and Jens.. she doesnt really know and doesnt want to buy something she doesnt need.. just wants something that's going to last

I went for the HP 4530s a couple weeks ago(i3-2310m/15.6"), though I paid $480:

It's thin enough(much thinner than my neighbor's Satellite), metal outside(no fingerprints if that matters) and has a pretty good keyboard. Initially I wanted to get an Acer but locally they were sold out and for one with similar specs, cost a little more(but battery life was rated longer). The Asus I had looked at had a flexible keyboard which was a no-go for me.

Best Buy had nothing but cheaper laptops if that matters(when I went there, they had a whole shelf that was under $400, and maybe 4-5 that were over that).

Check out circuit city they have some great deals, only catch is online shopping only unless you're in
Canada

Out of the 3 Toshibas you linked, eg6, I would spend a little more and get the Pentium with the extra RAM. All 3 have the same speed/size hard drive, but the extra processor power and ram will make a noticeable difference in day to day use.

Also, Toshiba is one of the better brands, if I were looking to buy with security I would be looking at Toshibas. HP getting out of the home PC market is an ill omen for their customer service, but since I work on my own I would be taking advantage of the discounts.

i say for $400, skip the whole celeron and pentium line. get something with amd a6/8 or intel i-3/5/7.

toshibas run like tanks but can be loader than a rock concert.
sonys are well made, but pretty pricey.
hps are solid all around.
acers are made from vtech plastic and are fugly, but run well.
compaqs are pretty similar to acers.
dells are meeh, too many problems with them, but they are prutty.
asus are nice and have solid configs, but are usually pricey too.
