I am looking at getting a new welder but can't really decide who I would like to purchase from, I am looking to do some mods to my go kart and buggy, I have spoken with some of the other big companies but they are a little too expensive for me at the time, if anyone has an idea or suggestion on where to look please be sure to let me know
 
What types and thicknesses of metal are you welding? What is your skill level? What is your budget?

If I were to ever buy a welder for home use again, I would buy a nice TIG.
 
i've got a 110 lincoln hd3200 seems to handle well just about everything we have tossed at it.

it was in the high $400 range, and more with the accessories i bought.

:werd: I have the exact same unit. Gets the job done, and will be more than enough for anything you'll be welding on a kart. I have argon and solid wire for most everything, and some flux core for the thicker stuff when the voltage starts to become an issue.
 
maybe for what you do :shrug2:

but for those of us who use a welder once maybe twice every few months, its perfect.
 
Bah I still wouldn't buy one. It is very limiting. I decent TIG will get you so much farther:

Miller Electric 907005 Diversion 165, AC/DC TIG, 230VAC

for $1200. When I bought my Lincoln SP135 110v MIG I paid $750...so for an extra $500, you can weld stainless AND aluminum over 1/4" thick...And if you are building a serious import, welding stainless and aluminum would be VERY helpful.
 
not too worried about welding stainless. and i have a spoolgun/gas to weld aluminum :shrug2:


gotta remember most people cant afford a $1200 car on this site, nevermind a welder... or a place to even put it :)

I can weld 1/4" plate with flux core with good penetration... Maybe a bit of preheat... But I don't think you'll need anything thicker on a gokart. :)

I built my Ranger entirely with a 110v Lincoln with flux core. None of it ever broke so it definitely works. For a few hundred extra dollars you could have a much nicer machine though. That's all I'm saying.

Thanks for the math lesson. I suppose that no matter what you buy, for a "few hundred dollars more", you could have something nicer.

As for not needing to weld stainless or aluminum, you'd be surprised how often you would do it if you had the capability. You'd start looking at building your own stainless headers and piping and building aluminum accessories and turbo piping on your own ;)
 
yeah i guess so. at my current pace of modification, i could have my own turbo header built in about 5 years.

How much does one need it?
How heavy duty will these tools need to be?

Snap-On and other high dollar tools are way super nice. But their price makes me cringe. I will not use them enough to justify its great ability or comfort.

My dad has a miller 110 and it works for a variety of needs. Would I weld a suspension up with it? Or weld up a dumped truck like under8d? No.......but I would do most things with it.

Longevity Tigweld 200DX

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions but I have decided to purchase form a company named longevity for a tig welder,they had awesome customer service and a great warranty on there units for very affordable prices...the name of the unit I got is a tigweld 200dx I will post some pics of my welds as soon as I figure out how to so you guys can see how it looks so be sure to let me know what you think

Good luck...I don't trust a 200 amp TIG welder that only costs $650.
