i jsut recently purchased another 98 civic, this models a ex vs my last turtleversion lx model. ive been looking into doing a swap and im realizing more that its not gonna be cheap and i should went with the 94 integra with a h22a in it allready, but i thought this would be more fun. now on to the question. ive been looknig into a b16a or a gsr motor. i can get a used gsr motor with 90k on it for about 1800. or i can get a b16a obd2 for 1500 (new) still used but 30kmiles. now my question is can i drop the b16 into my 98 civic. since the motor was made for a 92-95 civic. i know its technically illegal to have a motor older then your car, but i dont mind the risk and i doubt cops will be checking out numbers under my hood. if someone can help me out on this it would be great, im kinda new to this whole "ricing" scene and would love to get into it more.

An OBD II B16A was for the 96-00 Civics, so it's be fine in your car, however, if the GSR is 96+ I would go that route, 1.8 > 1.6, and then later on do a poor man's Type R by adding a B16A head, but that's me.

the only thing is the b16 is from a dealer and i know for a fact that it runs, the gsr is from a wrecked integra. i just dont wanna end up with someone elses headache. but i was thinkin gsr too for the torque. maybe the b16 was obd1 then cuz i know for a fact that its 92-95 b16a. the 96-00 was more then a new gsr

If you can look at, test the GSR in some way, compression, leak down, look at the chassis and see if the wreck worked the engine, IMO it would be well worth it to give the GSR a look.

idk if i mentioned the gsr motor has no harness with it. so how much would a new harness run my wallet?

Just use yours, and hunt down any plugs you're missing and add them in, or you should be able to pick up a harness for under $100.

i guess he sold the comptech header off the gsr motor. so now its a complete swap with no header or harness for 1650

If the only things it's missing are the header and harness that's a fucking great deal if the motor is in good condition. I'd be on it like stink on shit.

he says its in good condition but he also says hes never actually started it before since the car had no harness when he bought it

Compression and leak down test it. Pretty much anytime you buy a motor from an individual there's a chance of getting screwed, even if they don't know they're screwing you, but for the difference in price between buying it from somewhere online, and what he's asking, it may be worth it. Complete swaps are going for $2,400-$3,000, so for half the price, I'd take the chance, plus you can haggle him down a little using the fact that it's got no harness, andhe doesn't even know if it runs.

i might be able to compression test it, i dont have a way to have a steady flow for a leakdown. but your pretty much saying for the cost. any problem that could be with the engine would msot likely still end up cheaper then buying a whole new swap?

i got him to use the wiring from his bubble to try to get the motor to start, lets hope he can pull it off and i can get this ball rolling.

yea i was gonna order the 96-98 SiR II swap. plan on ordering this week, dropping it in sometime this month. then will have some smexy pictures. i also got a call back from a honda recycler that he has 2 integra gsrs sitting at his place, with intact motors. gonna go give them alook and hope they aint rusted out.
