I love my EG
Hey guys Im new to the forum. I need some expert advice. I just purchased a 1993 Honda Civic VX with a D15B7 motor. I have many questions. My first problem is How come when I slam on the gas my motor just revs and my car takes a long time to get to a certain speed. It's a 5speed. Is it my clutch, tranny, or timing. Another thing as well when I check the timing to were the top cam has to have the letters UP in the upward direction the car runs fine for a bit after that but goes back to the same problem. What might be wrong? Overall cost to fix? My second question is which ECU do I need for a D15B7 is it a P06 L00,L01 or P05 L00,L01. I love this car but I hope I don't hear that much bad news on how much it will cost to fix.

I'd guess it takes a long time to get going because it's a VX with a DX motor in it, not exactly quick.

What do you mean "it just revs and takes long time to get to a certain speed"? Does it "just rev", or does it go forward? What is the "certain speed"? Do you have a CEL? If so, what is it?

The correct ECU is the P06, but the VX had vtec, and a five wire O2 sensor. Did you do the swap?

What I mean is when I try to go on the freeway I smash on the gas but my motor only revs and dsnt speed up. If I push on the gas a little the motor still sounds like its doing too much work just to get to 40mph. Take off is slow from a stop light but once I mess with the cam to check the timing the car runs just fine but it'll go back doing the same thing. I currently have a P06 L00 and have been told by many that this is the wrong ECU??

Sounds kind of like your clutch is taking a shit on you, but adjusting the timing shouldn't do much, if anything, to fix that, even temporarily. Sounds like the ECU is correcting the timing after you mess with it.

P06 L00 is from the 93 Del Sol S with manual transmission, which had a D15B7, it's the right ECU for the motor, wrong one for the car, but it shouldn't matter unless the wiring was FUBAR during the swap. The VX had vtec, a five wire o2 sensor, ran an EGR.

What's your best advice to get this car running 100%. Should I look for the original motor or just fix my clutch? Its an autozone brand clutch but I think whoever put it in didn't do a good job. I also hooked up a P05 ECU and it seemed as if my motor was running smoother and more quite. Also whoever had this car before me messed with the wiring bcuz none of my lights on the cluster and center console work. Right now there hooked up to a fuse which works for now and they put a different older honda steering wheel which sucks.

Well, since changing the timing, and changing ECU's seems to fix it, that would lead away from the clutch being the problem, or at least the sole problem. Are you throwing a Check Engine Light? If so pull the code(s) and post them.

No CEL and hey I have the chance to pick up a P05 L00 for $50 should I bcuz isn't a P05 for a 92-93 Honda DC with a D15B7 motor?

I say its the clutch. If you try to get out of the clutch hard from a dead stop (like you were racing or in a rush) and all it does it rev really high as you go no where (with no tire spin) then it is the clutch.

I mean Honda DX and what do you also thinking I should look at replacing first or where I should start.

That makes the most sense, but the whole changing the timing, and it improving the response thing is throwing me off.

How do I know for sure and should I take it to Honda to inspect it or what should I do I just want this car to run like a champ

Typically, the people I have met that worked at a dealer service station wouldn't know what to do with a swap like that. They wouldn't, generally, know what to look up to fix anything since it isn't in the ALLDATA, or whatever they use there. You may get lucky and have knowledgeable people at yours though, call them up and ask them if they have someone there that can handle your set up. Give it a shot though if you want, can't hurt, might get lucky.

If you really want to get it fixed right, the best thing to do would be to find a Helms manual for your year Civic, it should have all the information since the swap and chassis are in the same generation, and track down all the sensors, wiring, emissions equipment, hoses, and match it all up according to the specs.

Ouch......hopefully this isn't another Civic that has been tossed from owner to owner and chopped up 14 ways with god knows how many motors. The picture I have in my head with all the possible electrical problems from engine harness to cluster scares me. It might be something easy to fix but could also be something that needs to be completely wired up from junkyard harnesses.

This is not something you would want to pay someone to do (based on my ASSuming the amount you spent and what the car is worth). If you don't feel confident tackling the wiring yourself...maybe you have a Honda friend that would be willing to help?

I still think the clutch is bad but I can't tell without driving it. Its really hard to install a clutch wrong and it still run. But I guess it is possible that some bolts have come loose b/c they weren't torqued down to spec.

Dam I really do hope its the clutch I just have to replace bcuz I've always wanted a EG and Dnt want to have to get rid of it and ruin my experience with this car. The car runs good for now no CEL the headlights always worked stereo works, my cluster works and if the wiring was all mest up would it effect the inside electronic stuff too or just the motor? My clutch pedal is soft as well which I have been told should be sort of hard to push? When I push the clutch pedal all the way down to the floor as possible it wont let me change gears from Neutral? The Guy who sold it to me said he had just taken it to a Mechanic to change the clutch and has warranty receipt for clutch which I have. I don't think they properly resurfaced the clutch.

There is definitely a problem with your clutch. IMO you'd be going good to start there, get that fixed and then you'll be able to see if these problems were all from that, or if there's something more going on.

Ok ima see when I can get that changed and thanx everyone for the help. Ill be back to let everyone know how it turned out or if I have any more questions
