Yep, about 2 months ago I've decided to join the marines.
One of the first thing a recruiter does is that he hands you about 13 or 15 little badges and asks you to arrange them in importance. My top 4 were:
1) Self-Dicipline, Self-Direction, Self-Reliance
2) Challenge
3) Physical Fitness
4) Pride of Belonging

I still have to go to MEPS (hopefully next month), and get processed but I'm trying to get into better shape.

I'm Going into the reserves and if I really like it I was told I can activate myself and versus the (1 week & 1 month) deal I can go for 6 months and come back. I want to keep my job and civilian life here but that may change.

I'm not joining for the money, the benefits are useful but is also not the reason. I actually want discipline in my life, I want the pride of being a marine, and I'm going into the marines aiming for LAV Crewman, but after I get in and after about 6 months to a year, I really want to be into Reconnaissance, truly a Scout Sniper. So once I get in I'm going to train my ass off in hope of being Physically (and mentally) fit enough and switch over to active and go for it!

I go on runs everyday, I finally got my breathing good for when I run because before I would take too short of steps and I would also breath short fast breaths through my mouth. Now I make sure its Deep and steady breaths through my nose (or inhale through my nose and exhale through my mouth).
i keep looking for advice and tips for better techniques.

I'm not in great shape by any means but i want to be!
I can do 73 crunches in 2 mintues, 10 pull ups, and The one run I did was a 1.5 mile in 13:40. I know that its simple stuff and this has nothing to do with most of the stuff you have to do in basic but i want to do better! My goal is 100 to 110 crunches in 2 minutes, 20 pull-ups, and I would honestly love to be around 11 minutes to 11:30 as far as the 1.5 mile goes.

My estimated "ship" date is around March, but I won't know exactly until I go to MEPS. So this gives me plenty of time to work my ass off.

Just felt like sharing with you guys. ^_^

So how does your current job feel about this? Are they going to give you a leave of absence for basic or what?

And, congratulations.

Congratulations and good luck! Go find your bankai. :D

I'll keep building newer and better hardware to keep you and your crew safe.

Thanks and while I'm not a full time employee i won't get paid leave, they will hold my job (as it is the law) but they did say just as long as I have proof of any time that I am ordered to be out of town there will be no issue with me losing my job. :)

HAHAHA, Thanks man, this is a lot more supportive than what all of my friends have said. What is it that you do? ( I think I may have asked that in a thread a long time ago) :) Like what kinds of things?

Congratulations and thank you! My years of military service were the one of the best decisions I ever made. Take pride in wearing the uniform.

I work for Lockheed and build all kinds of neato toys that go boom so you don't go boom.

I've got a friend that does the same thing for Lockheed here in Mountain View. You ever work with those guys? We always like to say his job is to blow up innocent women and children. :D

My program doesn't have any people in Mountain View that I know of. :) I also like that my missiles shoot down other missiles- so they prevent innocent women and children from blowing up. :D

you don't really need to run and do sit ups to train for the marines. just go camping in the desert with a bottle of water and a dildo in your ass. thats the marines for you.

anyway, good luck man. and remember if you believe ANYTHING a recruiter tells you, you are dumb enough to be a Marine. Be skeptical of everything. and if it isn't in writing, it means you're about to get fucked.

Good luck man. The idea of a 'reverist' doesn't really exist anymore. Everyone i know who was a reservist went over seas to the sand box. most of them 2 or 3 times.

True, one of the reasons why I went reserves is so that I can go to basic faster, as of now I'm looking at about march, but if I said I wanted to go active I'd be waiting quite a bit longer. Plus since I'll be reserve I can technically activate my self for 6 month cycles. (Which I probably will) So I know for a fact I will get a lot of time in the field, but I will also get "some" home time.

there is no "i'd have to wait longer" with the military. recruiters have quarterly buckets and want to front run their next quarter. they can send you any time they want.

Oath

Once you take the oath you're in and subject to whatever schedule assigned - that's a fact.

When I joined, the recruiter gave me a range of dates to report in and asked which I preferred. Graduated HS in June, so I picked September to have a little summer vacation to enjoy with my buds. Then off to basic training I went on September 3rd just like I was told.

Woo hoo!!!

Depends on what he's doing. When I went in I was originally going to be an air traffic controller, but the school was a year out, so I fucked myself and went Combat Engineer so I could go in three months.

And just to reinforce something that was already said "GET IT IN WRITING!!!" I don't give a shit how nice he is, or what a cool guy he is, or how many times he took you to tittie bars and got you wasted, your recruiter WILL fuck you. His job is to get you in the military, not be your friend ...no matter what he says. He doesn't care what job you wind up with, it's not his concern. Stick to you guns about what you want, you will get it, you just have to have the will and patience.

Oh yeah I agree with a lot that has been said, writing is best. But I was told that there are usually more reserve slots open than active duty slots and because of that i can get in quicker, He said the two quickest open slots for sure was a Combat engineer and a Lav crewman so I chose the second one for a little more "excitement"

My recruiter told be that after a certain amount of time and depending on who I talk to (and if I meet all of the requirements) that I can change my MOS like after 1 year versus 2 years.
Still isn't gonna stop me from going into reconnaissance, at that point if I can get in then i'll be happy to switch from reserve to full time active.

Don't know if Marine Combat Engineers do the same job we did, but blowing shit up is pretty exciting :)

If it's anything like the Army, just make sure you get the job you want to start, don't count on being able to switch MOS. As far as schooling goes for things like Recon, sniper, Ranger, SEAL, you need to be in top shape, and a REAL go getter. There is nothing half assed about any of that shit. I went through an abbreviated RIP course, which is the entrance course for Rangers, and pretty close to the same for sniper, and it is hard, not just physically, but mentally. You need to be able to keep going for an indefinite amount of time, on no sleep, and very little food/water, as well as being able to think on your feet, and operate with little to no guidance. Those course kick your ass for a reason though.

Yes I highly agree, never bank on being able to switch MOS's. Like I said I'm training now and once I get through basic I wil work ever harder because I want to survive those courses that will kick my ass. Its been like one of those dreams that I though was pretty cool as a kid. So I'm going to keep at it.
