...has a job!
My wife's ugly sterile old '96 Avalon has finally reached it's end. It's been a rather reliable turd but we are ready to move on. We are shopping for used Japanese semi-lux sport sedans and we have narrowed our choices down to the '04-'08 Acura TL or the '03-'07 Infiniti G35 sedan.

The Acura is harder to find, more expensive, and less of a performer...but it is reported to be more reliable.

The G35s are plentiful, cheaper, and reported to be a significantly better performer (by Motor Trend), but from what I gather they are thought to be slightly less reliable.

I think we've made our choice based on several factors and it seems very clear. However, I'm interested in seeing what the community thinks. Thanks brotatos.

If you are going to track it, get the g35. The TL will get better mileage and hold up better over the long term.

It's his wife's car lol, highly doubt it'll be seeing any track time :)

G35. No brainer.

I work three miles away so I ride my bicycle. She works just as close but she manages a bank and has to wear nice clothes so she drives. On weekends we go everywhere together, so it'll see split duty. Thanks for the input so far.

You pretty much said it all already - the G35 has more balls but the TL has Honda reliability. I'd probably do the TL, but I am a Honda fanboy, lol...

the g-35 sedan is decent. i don't really care for it. if you are going to get a G, it's coupe or bust. the auto trannys on the G dont' shift smooth.

reliability isn't a factor. both of those cars will go for 150k miles with no issues.

The gen G35 you are looking at isn't that peppy. the autotragic holds it back. i have driven them several times when i got loaner cars from the dealer. also, if you park on a hill, it will roll back 2 feet before the tranny locks. lol

you really need to drive both. think about what you are really looking for, they are both decent cars for under $15k.

I was just trying to make a point. If HP is your priority (which I know it is not), get the G35. If its comfort, fuel economy, reliability, ect... get the TL. Where do you live where they are hard to come by? I know a LOT of people with a 3rd gen TL with over 150k and no issues. The G35 sedans look a little fugly to me for some reason too.

I really liked my Acura TL. RWD > FWD but its for his wife and chances are it will never matter.

If I had the choice to get a G35 or TL..... I'd have to think about it for a bit but I think I'd go with another TL

I drove my TL year round and it did great in the snow. I also managed to get 28MPG out of it when did a lot of highway driving. I also found it to be rather fast and braking was awesome (6 speed with brimbos)

I'm more of a Nissan person then a Honda guy but I think I'd still do TL. Yes its FWD but unless its my only car where I'm going to be having some fun in it. It really doesn't matter.

was facing same dilemma and ended up with 05 G35X, it looked like a better car for the money and AWD was better option and a big factor too, because i go skiing alot and G35X performs much better in the snow.
Plus honda's auto trany didnt have a good reputation at the time

Hmmmmm. I'll have to think on that.

what are you looking to spend?
About $15k. And for some reason there are very few TLs with low mileage for a reasonable price in our area. They seem to be less plentiful and more desirable than the G35. Perhaps that should be an indication of some sort...

My best friend has a 03 TL type S with 180k on it. Runs like new. We take it across state to see my brother all the time and its a great ride.

I drove a g35x for 6 months or so and I really liked it, but it wasn't nearly as solid, sturdy, and as fun to drive. The S was great. I know its out of your range for that generation, but its a great car.
