I just found this too much of an outrage. Absolute lack of common sense and leadership skills right there.

Cliffnote: Parents moved to new neighbor with 2 yr old. Got lost and found Safeway. Ate 2 sandwiches while grocery shopping and forgot to pay. Both parents arrested and daughter was taken by CPS.

Yeah i hate it when people open products and eat in the store without paying first and this may contribute to the store's pilferage, but seriously. the bought $50 of groceries and had a child with them? the store manager didnt stop to think for one second that maybe it was an honest mistake?

It's a tough call...

They (Safeway) probably decided they were tired of people doing that to them. So they just started to crack down and it was bad timing for this woman, her husband, and their child.

The real problem is letting people do this in the first place. They should have immediately walked up to them and made them pay for the sandwiches. Why wait and see if they pay or not?

why can't someone wait until they get done shopping? they were "famished"? thats a little bit dramatic. If you are so poor you can't stop at any point and get food before you are "famished", why would you move to the most expensive state in the country?

odds are, it happens in this store a lot. i have sympathy for the situation, but i don't have any for people who claim ignorance.

I give her a pass on the "famished" thing because she is pregnant...

i definitely agree with this.

i just vehemently disagree with how the store handled the situation. ive worked at a grocery store and ive seen a lot of theft, but we were never this zealous about "learning them a lesson."

if the store manager really wanted to "punish" them, he could've just fined $250, 86'ed the couple and sent them on their way. instead, he's probably going to lose his job and safeway probably lost a lot of customers and money to 'fixing' the situation.

yeah...we had a similar problem at the store I worked in when i was in high school.

we'd just call the store manager's cordless and he can ring them up with a credit card using the self checkout key pad. It was quick painless and not embarrassing.

bullshit. if you are "famished", walk in, buy a sandwich, eat, then shop. they just didn't use common sense.

but then again, they are from california.

Wow, this is fucking stupid, and they're from Hawaii, not California.

fuck em.

i dont understand why anyone would eat in a supermarket anyways. the item isnt even yours, until you pay for it...

When I grocery shop with my 2 year old I'll grab cookies or whatever off the shelf, open them, and give him a couple if he's acting up/getting bored/being a PITA

I pay at checkout so I guess it's a little different than this story but I promise you if some asswipe manager tried to "detain" me for it there would some serious punches to the face

No shit...since when is petty theft an arrestable offense. We're talking what? $5 per person?

about the same as when peeing outside makes you a sex offender?

there are lots of things that dont make sense with law. :rimshot:

Inversely however, it seems rather unlikely that not one but TWO people FORGOT to pay for the sandwiches they ate...how did they forget? Where did the wrappers/boxes go? When finished eating they would either throw them out, a conscious attempt to cover up their thievery, or, leave the packages in the cart so they could pay at check out.

Edit: So the story says they saved the wrappers but forgot to pay at check out.I still call bullshit. When you r cart was sitting there empty with the exception of the two sandwich wrappers what did you do? And ftr, $50 of groceries really isn't all that much stuff so it's not like they lost the wrappers under a mountain of cereal and dairy products...

You don't break the law, you don't go to jail. Pretty simple concept.

Go try stealing from a supermarket in Iran and see what happens.
