Idle Issues

Im not really sure what the deal is here, the car has never had this serious of an idle issue before.

The car, for the most part, will idle almost dead on 1k rpm, but if i sit for more about 5 minutes (after its fully warmed up) the car will sometimes throw a CEL, which i believe said was Fuel System related but i cant remember what CEL it was because it only comes on when driving so i can never check the code. Soon as the code pops, the idle starts to start dropping, and raising and dropping
(almost dying, alot) and most of the time will just die if i dont feather the throttle.

The idle is so bad, that when i come to a stop, sometimes the cars idle will drop so low and itll die, or in process of parking, everytime i stop to pull into/back into a spot, itll die... sometimes dying 2-3 times before i can even get the car into a spot.

This happens despite having over 1/2 tank of gas, or just having 1/2 tank of gas.

Could this be a fault IACV? Or should i look at possible other issues.

As for the CEL, the car doesnt drive any different, it just makes the Idle go to shit.

When the car DOES die, or the CEL pops, i can just turn the car off (even while driving) and back on (yes, even while driving) and the code is gone, and the idle is back to normal again until i sit still for too long.

I have the same issue in my new Rex. Mine is way worse right now though. I'm hoping an in depth tune up will at least help me get closer to figuring it out. I really just made a list and am committed to getting basically everything new, so even if the engine ends up being unrecoverable I could just buy a reman long block and switch it all over. At least I'll be able to afford doing it right this time. The reason I will trash my engine in a heartbeat is that it has a lil over 220k mles just like my blue one did.

I think the culprit really is tied to a line that popped off of something next to my fuel filter. Gonna fix it and see what happens after I get a new battery and alternator belt on it this weekend. I work 6 or 7 days a week right now so I never have time...

Anyone have an idea?

Have you checked/cleaned your IACV?

What I would try:

1) When the fluctuating idle starts (up/down) I would pop the hood and pull the IACV electrical plug.
If the idle doesn't change....then the IACV is the problem.

2) Take the IACV out and clean it.

3) If the IACV isn't the problem.....
You can take the intake pipe off to expose the throttle body to do a check with the FITV (if you have one.....?)
The hole inside the TB on the bottom towards the firewall side is a check
When the car is doing this at nice and warm running temp....plug that hole.
There should be no suction but if there is...FITV could be bad/dirty.

The fact that you say you sometimes need to give it gas to stay idling makes me think the IACV isn't doing its job at running temps....maybe sticking and just needs a cleaning?

takes a whole 5min to clean iacv..even if it is not the main problem it should help if it wasnt cleaned for a while...i kno mine did when i cleaned mine

when i pulled the IACV plug, the car shut off. I also noticed i have a bolt missing from the IACV, and you can feel suction throught the bolt hole.. Bad news is, i think the threads on the IM are stripped. FML.

Heli-coil that bitch....it'll be fine.
Just use the right thread.....I am guessing 8X1.5 but its a total guess :shrug2:
Take the bolt with you and look it up on a chart.

Get the IACV out......it sounds like the electrical part of the IACV is fine but it should be cleaned.....then heli-coil that bad thread on the IM.

Only other options I can see are: (best to worst)

1) Get another IM
2) Get all cheap and quick with some hondabond, cross your fingers, and see what happens
3) Or get all stupid with some JB weld you can never remove the IACV again

well im not getting a new manifold, its a skunk 2 and taking it off would require time i dont have anytime soon.. i may just use some epoxy and seal the hole T_T

Just don't forget to cross those fingers.....and let it cure before lift off.

Otherwise.....heli coil can happen quicker
