Hi there, I drive a 91' Honda CRX with a D16Z5 engine and I was wondering of it is possible to put a turbo on my engine without any complicated modifications. If not, then which kind of swap can I use best if I want a minimum of 200 bhp on the wheels. Of course is money an option but, I wanna know what I need and how much I need to save.
I read a lot of threads but couldn't find anything that fits my question.

Please help !!!!!! :D
 
Those things will help with the longevity of your motor post-boost, but they are not absolutely necessary, especially if you keep the boost at conservative levels. A basic turbo kit can be bolted on to your engine without doing any internal mods.

You will however need to invest in some tuning, whether it be a chipped ECU or some type of standalone setup...
 
What exactly do you mean with standalone setup? And what kinde of lvl is conservitive for a turbo. Becouse I read some posts and some say that not all turbos are the same (ofcourse) but what I ment to say is that some turbos with a low psi output still deliver a great amount of boost.
So lets say i want to fabricate a home made turbo kit, witch one can I use best?

You "can" turbo and that's it. Or you can add a little bigger set of injectors. This is what guys did all the time back in the day

But a chipped and socketed ecu is best but that takes more knowledge time and money. Then it would need a tune which is more Money needed.
 
What is socketed???

The problem is that I do know a lot about bodywork but only the basics about the engine.
My problem is that I live in The Netherlands and some parts are hard to come by and if you find them there very expensive. And if i check eBay I'll find plenty but the shipping costs are huge.
So my next question is, what is best? Shall I go turbo and first take my engine apart to replace all the weakened parts (what I have read in one of the threads on this forum, that's it's a smart move to do that when you're engine has run more than 200k an of course it's an 20 year old engine) or should I go with a engine swap like H22A witch one will have to undertake the same weak parts replacement and if I want to later on, Turbo the sucker :D
 
Socketed means it has a socket installed into the ECU so you can hook up a basic printer cable to it and be able to tune it with a program and a lap-top.

To have a fun, fast car that will last (like for daily driving).....I say swap either a DOHC ZC or B18A or B18B. H22 cost more and needs much more knowledge to make happen. Since you are new....I say no to the H22 swap. Any swap will cost you a little more than a Ebay turbo and wont give you the same horsepower but it will also run for a longer amount of time.

But if this is a weekend car that you want to learn more about.....you can turbo it and learn to re-build the motor when you need to. Turbo sounds sweet and is a very fun powerband.

Simply stated....you need to become more familiar with researching possibilities on your own. Many of the answers you need have been covered multiple times on a variety of forums and threads.

Once you have a better idea (specific direction) and this becomes obvious to other members that you are doing this FOR SURE....you will find more people want to help. So many guys come in with good intentions only to give up after many of us educate them (for no reason b/c they gave up). So many of us are gun shy lol.
 
Well I understand what you're saying and it makes a lot of sens, so I definitively don't want to be one of the quitters and I guess i'll do some more research and learn more about doing research on my own :D

But I still got one NOOB question left;P :well with more horse power i definitively will need better breaks. So the question is, is there a break swap that is slightly bigger than the one one I have right now( CRX '91 ED9)

You got a ED9 so that's the European CRX Si? Glass roof?
4 wheel DISC brakes or drums in the rear?

That Si motor is a solid 108hp motor. My friend has one. Hitting 14.9 1/4mile times with intake, header, and exhaust
And that was with over 250k (miles not Km) on the original motor/trans. Just clutch and timing belt changes.
But he had 2.2 second 60ft times on Street tires

In terms of cost of swaps.....(US currency) $1800 and up for a DOHC swap
I got $8000 in my current set up and it's still bone stock internally and only 200whp (right now :wink:)
Yes......I know.....that is silly but :shrug2:

he already has the D16Z5 engine which is the same as the DOHC D16A8, DOHC D16A9 and JDM DOHC ZC

i believe the model of his ED9 is not Si but is "1.6i-16", like this (except this is 88):

And I have front and rear disk breaks. But there is always room for improofment right, so I always have the option to go aftermarket or stock only from a other model. The question is which one? I do believe that a CRX Vtech has bigger front disks but will that be enough stopping power? And of course it's not a very complicated swap.

So how do I get my bearings around what to do best, knowing that I drive a European model and everybody talks about US models. Sometimes it can get a bit confusing with the other codes that everybody here uses.

Apparently my engine is the same as: DOHC D16A8, DOHC D16A9 and JDM DOHC ZC, so under which threads should I start to read. If someone can tell me that I'll read the hell out off it :D

as far as what engine will bolt right in, your ED9 chassis is the same as the USDM CRX ED8 and ED9, which means that the D-series engines are the only ones that come close to just bolting right in - the B16A VTEC in the european CRX had a chassis code of EE8 - to swap any B/H-series engine into your CRX would be the same as swapping any B/H-series engine into a USDM CRX - you would need engine, transmission, ECU, aftermarket mount kit, different shift linkage, exhaust, etc. - none of these swaps as a stock engine are going to get you close to the 200 wheel horsepower you were looking for - for the money that you would spend in just swapping a stock B or H series engine into it, you could do a lot to the D16Z5

I would just keep the engine. But if you want a challenge and want to learn......go for a swap.
 
Well then I think I'll keep the engine and see what the possibilities are and how much hp I can crank out of it, but I also want to learn more and master the swaping process. So I guess the best thing to do is to take it one step at the time. Eventually I'll go with the swap, even if it is just for the know how. And I like the challenge to make it fit and work of course :p
