hey guys i have a jdm b18cR with intake, header, 2.5" exhaust highflow cat no resonator and newer civic si muffler. its running on a chipped and socketed p28 on a type r base map on crome. it runs fine, vtec at 5800, but its spitting out lots of carbon on my rear bumper when i get on it, and i know it needs a good solid tune to be perfect, no base map bullshit...

however from your guys experience would I be pressed to lower vtec with the tune? i see all these k20 guys with vtec at 4200, it makes me so jealous, and it would be awesome if my motor would benefit from lowering vtec. cuz lez-be-honest, the b18 has no balls until vtec...if you could even call it balls ;) lol

maybe my question should be, "what do you all motor b18c guys normally see as a good round about rpm for vtec engagement on modded type r's?"

thanks in advance! i havent been on this site for years but i hope the good enthusiasts are still on here!

get it dyno tuned. it should not be spitting out anything on your bumper. only then will you know if you should lower the vtec crossover, and my guess is that if the motor is all stock internally that its in the right area.

lowering vtec just for the sake of PuWaaanggg will make ur powerband shitty! remember the louder the vtec the narrower the powerband you wont benefit from lowering or even highering vtec on a stock motor
until you go to the dyno and tune it for the sweetest part

yeah i know its probably fine where its at, its just really high:( so nobody ever lowers vtec and sees good midrange gain on a stock internals/cams on a b18c?

If the engine is stock, then best to leave it where it is. And yes, you will see VTEC engagement being lowered on reflashed or tuned K-series engines that are fairly stock, but that's a whole different thing. Those engines have an engagement window instead of a static engagement point. They can benefit from tweaks in that area...

Reads like the map on it now is running rich. (black ka-ka)

Maybe check your plugs too.

Magana is right.....tune. I say this b/c you got a socketed set up ready to go.

VTEC engagement is supposed to be a smooth transition.....for best results. Not like hitting the giggle juice button. My stock K20R swap/ECU makes VTEC jump too hard. It may be due to my RBC IM but I need K-Pro and a tune.....bad. I bet I'll get 20-25whp gain from it. But that's over $1000 with management and a dyno/tune.

The crossover on my b18c setup is 5500 with aftermarket cams. I started at 5200 and it would bog down a little after vtec crossover until 5500. Either dyno tune or get rid of that "chip".

thank you guys for the input. im probably not gonna get it tuned till i rebuild it next year with s2p1's and hondata. that or k20a swap. whatever :)

reason being nobody on the east coast tunes with anything other than hondata and thats a waste of money for my setup *right now*

that's because they cant tune, they dont have a base map to modify. In your case a stock base map on crome would be more than enough to tune on.

I have a 96 JDM B18CR & my VTEC engages very nice at 4600rpms, my power band is really smooth & very strong starting at 6k all the way up to 9k where usually shift at. Am running one of those Spoon chips on my chipped P28.

hmmmm i like the sound of that! spoon wouldnt make chips like that with vtec at 4600 and purposely make you lose midrange power ya know? i need to take it on a dyno and see where my low cam maxes out at though i heard those chips run mad lean. thanks psycho!
