So my dad's got a last gen iPhone, and said I can have it if I can find somewhere to get service with it. However, I am a cheap ass bastard and will not pay over $45 a month for service, it's ridiculous. Virgin Mobile has the best unlimited plan, but they won't let you use an iPhone unless you buy their over priced one. Who will let me connect this thing that has decent rates?

Probably locked to AT&T then. Might be able to fix that but I don't know enough about it.

Shoot fireballs at it? Any iPhone people know if you can jailbreak it and use it as a PDA type of thing?

That was my first idea, just use it as a Ipod Touch, but he's only giving it to me if I can get phone service on it.

Jailbreak (easy), unlock (easy), then grab something off Cydia that will mask the fact that it is an iSuck, then play with unlimited data plan.

I follow up until Cydia, everything after that doesn't mean anything to me. I don't do cell phones, or iPones/Droids so what the process from Jailbreak to making calls?

Or whatever tool you need to unlock- all depends on phone revision (3, 3GS, 4, 4S) and OS version that you have on there.

But-

1 Jailbreak (OS and phone rev dependent)
2 Unlock
3 Cydia = jailbreak app store for iPhone, installed on jailbreak

There should be something in Cydia that will allow you to mask the iPhone's identity so it looks like another generic data phone to whatever network you're on. I know they exist- just never had to dig one up on my own.

friend of mine has an iPhone that is jailbroken. he took the SIM card out of an iPad 3G and put it in his phone. he pays the $40/month data fee and then uses VOIP apps for phone calls and text messaging.

i don't know all of the details but maybe look into it.

Yea that would be cool. That was my suggestion when I was talking to Verizon, just get a data package for $35 a month, and just use Google Talk, or some other VoIP program, but he said that you can have just data, you have to at least have the cheap talk plan, which is another $35 a month, fuck that.

Thanks for the info Mike, I'll check out that link. Virgin Mobile can do iPhone, but you have to buy it from them. So far it seems if I wanted to use them, I'd have to buy one of their cheap smart phones, and move the service over to the iPhone once is freed up, I just don't know if it's this simple. Edit: Reading that link they are doing it with the GoPhone like I have, so things are looking more promising :)

yeah thats why you use the sim from an ipad, since you cant get a voice plan on that. you can only get data. but this also requires you to own an ipad 3g. you could probably fine one used for around 300, use it on wifi only if you have any use for a tablet, then just use data on the iphone.

which iphone do you have again? i think this may only work for the iphone 3g.

Pretty sure it's a 3G, whatever the last generation is. Hmm, don't have an iPad, and buyiong one would kind of defeat the idea of being a cheap ass.

It's a 3GS

So, I reset the phone, all content and settings, now it is just showing me that I can slide to make an emergency call, how do I get it back to the "desktop" or whatever they call it?

Ok, nvm, I hooked it up to the computer, and iTunes turned back on. I just now the jailbreaking/unlocking begins.

Grrr.

First try didn't take, at which point you have too use iTunes to restore from DFU mode, but iTunes decided to upgrade at the same time, so now instead of easy to use 4.2.1, I have not as fun to use 5.1 :(

Alright, it's jailbroken with redsn0w :)
