Hey guys, just need a little help here...

I'm tearing down a B18a1 right now and the cams are just stuck in there. The cam retainers (arch things above cams) or whatever theyre called wont budge. I removed the bolts holding them in but they wont move.

I tried tapping them with a rubber mallet, turning the cams, lifting up on the cam gears etc.

Any other tips on getting these suckers out would be appreciated. I'm trying to get a pic up but photobucket is being gay...

Thanks

get a big metal fork and pry them out.

but for real, tap your cam gear up with a rubber mallet. its the dowels that are holding them in.

heres a picture of the head...bolts were still in on this picture.

hmmm, ok. I'll try tapping the cam gears rather than the actual dowels and see if that'll do it.

Grab a screwdriver and stick it down the bolt hole (NOT all the way down to the threads, just far enough to a point where you can use the head casting as a point to rest the tip of the screw driver and the cap itself as a fulcrum.) Move the screw driver handle towards the front and rear of the car, it should basically be prying on the cap. Try this a couple times on one bolt hole then move to the other bolt hole on the same cap and do the same thing. One side of the cap will pop up when you have broken them loose.

I'll give that a shot as well tomorrow. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Thanks for the tips guys. This is my frist engine build. Kind of excited, but nervous. I'll have a build thread up in a week or so once things get rollin.

It's already been said to lightly pry them from down in the holes - use a philips screwdriver or drift punch.

Alternate, use a small hammer and lightly tap them from the sides - tap equally on each side while lifting up on them. They are stuck on the guides.

Whatever you do, don't brutalize them - be careful and apply force a little at a time and from each side equally.
